Student Discourse And Problem Solving In A High School Mathematics Classroom, Natalie J. Chism
Student Discourse And Problem Solving In A High School Mathematics Classroom, Natalie J. Chism
MSU Graduate Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore the problem-solving process and discourse in three high school Algebra 2 classes and analyze how discourse might be used to facilitate the problem-solving process. High school Algebra 2 students in this study were asked to engage in discourse with their peers in order to reach conclusions in open-ended problem-solving tasks. The teacher acted as the facilitator and encouraged students to act as the mathematical authorities. On two different days, students were given two different real-life problem-solving tasks and asked to reach possible conclusions to those tasks. Three research questions guided the study: …
The Effects Of A Multi-Component Social Skills Self-Monitoring Program On Two Females Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Mckenzie Bacon
The Effects Of A Multi-Component Social Skills Self-Monitoring Program On Two Females Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Mckenzie Bacon
MSU Graduate Theses
Individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often struggle to engage in the skills necessary to engage in a back-and-forth conversation, or reciprocal social conversations (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; Koegel, Park, & Koegel, 2014; Landa et al., 1992; Paul et al., 2004). An ABAB withdrawal design was employed to assess the use of a social skills program which consisted of 2 main components: (1) ASD on the Go module training with embedded video modeling, and (2) social skills self-monitoring with goal setting. Two participants were selected, both 13-year-old females with high-functioning ASD. During both treatment phases, participants were taught verbal …

Developing Perceptions: Piloting A Corequisite Writing Course, Kailyn Shartel Hall
Developing Perceptions: Piloting A Corequisite Writing Course, Kailyn Shartel Hall
MSU Graduate Theses
This thesis focuses on information gathered during Fall 2017 and Fall 2018, examining the students and the perceptions of the students in different developmental writing courses with regard to their own writing and their place in the academic community. Chapter One, “Redefining Developmental Writing Demographics,” focuses on demographics obtained from a mass survey given to students in prerequisite and corequisite sections of ENG 100 in Fall 2017 and Fall 2018. Primarily, this analysis focuses on readjusting assumptions about the demographics of students who enroll in developmental writing and how the students in prerequisite courses differed, and did not, from those …
Teacher Perceptions Of Parental Incarceration And Its Influence On Children's Academic Success, Amber L. Hooper
Teacher Perceptions Of Parental Incarceration And Its Influence On Children's Academic Success, Amber L. Hooper
MSU Graduate Theses
A child’s educational fulfillment is often supported by the stability of parents being present in a child’s life. Children’s academic learning can be reinforced by parents taking an active role in promoting their child’s education. When a parent is incarcerated, the child can be left without a support person for their academic success. This may lead to behavior problems in school and the increased chance at academic failure and grade retention. The separation of a parent in a child’s early education years may have effects that last into adulthood and set the stage for intergenerational incarceration. This study examined teachers’ …

Examining The Effects Of Service-Learning On Students' Perceptions Of The Ches Responsibilities– A Pilot Study, Victoria M. Surratt
MSU Graduate Theses
Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of a service-learning project on students' willingness, confidence, and perceived importance to incorporate the Certified Health Education Specialist, Areas of Responsibility (CHES-AOR), into their profession. It was hypothesized that students participation in a service-learning project in an undergraduate health and wellness course would be more willing, confident, and perceive it as more important to apply the CHES-AOR within their chosen health profession. Methods: Missouri State University students registered in the fall 2018, undergraduate Health and Wellness service-learning course (KIN-350-001), completed an online survey at the beginning and the end of the semester. Seven questions were …

An Exploration Of Child Life Programming And Facility-Canine Assisted Therapy In Pediatric Hospital Settings, Bailey N. Barnett
MSU Graduate Theses
The field of Child Life and of canine-assisted therapy have both been shown to facilitate opportunities for patients to cope more positively during hospitalization. Posing Purposeful Questions In A Mathematics Tutoring Setting, Sara Elaine Jones
MSU Graduate Theses
One of the eight Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) is the posing of purposeful questions. Many studies have been conducted that support the need, importance, and effectiveness of purposeful questioning in conceptual mathematics teaching.
