As the 1991 season began, it became apparent that the success of the Maine team would hinge on the rate at which the young Black Bear squad would mature. Out of 17 players, 10 were freshmen. The sooner the first-year players could adjust to collegiate play and gain confidence in their abilities, the sooner the Black Bears could be on the road to victory.
