This study examines the coding reliability and accuracy of pre-service teachers in a teaching methods class using digital video (DV)-based teaching episodes and Studiocode analysis software. Student self-analysis of DV footage may offer a high tech solution to common shortfalls of traditional systematic observation and reflection practices by increasing the amount, timeliness, and accuracy of performance feedback. What is yet to be determined is whether students can reliably and accurately analyze such footage. This study explores the effects of immediate and delayed feedback for 2 noncohort groups of high school students enrolled in distance learning courses at Brigham Young University. One group received immediate feedback while the second group received delayed feedback. Those students receiving immediate feedback performed significantly better on final exams, but those who received delayed feedback completed courses in significantly less time. The findings promise to inform best practices for providing feedback to secondary students in a distance learning setting and also give cause for further research.

To extend previous research findings on the effectiveness of microteaching techniques, all 40 candidates in the 1967 San Jose State College summer elementary intern teaching program were randomly divided into 2 groups. f3oth groups had the same program except that 1 participated in an oft-campus observation and teaching program; the other participated in an on-campus microteaching program. Five-minute pre- and post-summer lesson excerpts were video tape-recorded for each of the candidates.
