There is a stark contrast between the research and published accounts reflecting women's experiences in coping with an eating disorder in comparison to men's narratives. Because of this, many medical and mental health providers do not consider an eating disorder as a possible diagnosis when men present with symptoms associated with an eating disorder. This study examines the potential mediating effects of prior knowledge regarding autism spectrum disorders and Asperger syndrome (AS), first and second-generation family ties, college major, gender, and level of exposure to Dr. Sheldon Cooper, the main character of The Big Bang Theory, on college students' perceptions of a popular television character who displays traits and characteristics of Asperger syndrome/autism spectrum disorder. This study explored whether (1) adult cognitive development correlates with spiritual development, (2) wisdom development mediates the relationship, and (3) age, gender, education level, socioeconomic status, or religious denomination are associated with level of cognitive, wisdom, or spiritual development. University students and alumni (N = 134) completed a demographic questionnaire, the Model of Hierarchical Complexity Helper-Person Problem (Commons & Pekkar, 2004), the Spiritual Assessment Inventory (Hall & Edwards, 1996, 2002), and the Self-Assessed Wisdom Scale (Webster, 2003). Ego development theory, proposed by Jane Loevinger (1966, 1976), is the study of how an individual's processing of experience and meaning-making of the world develops. The tool used to measure ego development is the Washington University Sentence Completion Test (WUSCT), and its scoring manual is the foundation for the high validity and reliability of the measurement tool. Susanne Cook-Greuter (1999b) constructed a modified version of the WUSCT, the Sentence Completion Test Integral (SCTi-MAP), and in order to continue the trend of strong psychometric properties, a scoring manual needs to be constructed for the new sentence stems found on the SCTi-MAP. …

The integral sentence completion test (SCTi) was developed by Susanne Cook-Greuter in 1999. Her SCTi was a revision of the Washington University Sentence Completion Test devised by Jane Loevinger in 1970 and revised in 1985 and again in 1996. The test was devised to measure one's level of ego development by providing 36 stems and asking respondents to complete the sentence stems with whatever comes to their mind. Because the test is semi-projective, the scoring process requires training and familiarity with the test and with the concept of ego development.
