Formal education of master level genetic counseling trainees has occurred since the 1970s however, unlike other health care disciplines there has been no research conducted into their learning styles. Researchers have long been interested in the academic underachievement and disengagement of many African American students. Fordham and Ogbu (1986) offered the acting White phenomenon as one way to understand the problem. Fordham (1996) found that, in order to avoid being accused of acting White, some Black high achievers limit their academic abilities, particularly around Black low achieving students. Black high achievers can also encounter psychological costs as a result of limiting their academic prowess. A review of the legislative and policy history of child welfare and early childhood education systems highlights gaps in communication, data sharing and planning between the two agencies. Closing these gaps can have a significant, positive effect on many aspects of the development and achievement of young children within the child welfare system. This quantitative study examined the factors that impact urban teachers' efficacy and their ability to motivate urban students within their classroom. Teacher efficacy was the primary factor observed in this study. Five dimensions were created to guide the study: motivation, administrative support, teacher power, teacher morale, and a teacher's teaching method. There were significant differences found in all dimensions that supported the fact that efficacy measurements influence student motivation. However, not all youth who have been exposed to violence develop behavioral problems. There has been no shortage of calls to improve teaching. Even the federal law, the NoChild Left Behind Act, has mandated high quality teaching in the nation's public schools.But the question still remains "What makes an effective teacher, particularly of African -American males in an urban environment?"African- American males in public schools are the hardest hit, having the lowest achievement rates on standardized tests and the highest dropout rates of approximately 50 or more. How Black artists-othered and positioned at the margins of "civilization" in the United States-construct knowledge, context, and historical memory is informative to urban education research and policy. This study explored whether (1) adult cognitive development correlates with spiritual development, (2) wisdom development mediates the relationship, and (3) age, gender, education level, socioeconomic status, or religious denomination are associated with level of cognitive, wisdom, or spiritual development. University students and alumni (N = 134) completed a demographic questionnaire, the Model of Hierarchical Complexity Helper-Person Problem (Commons & Pekkar, 2004), the Spiritual Assessment Inventory (Hall & Edwards, 1996, 2002), and the Self-Assessed Wisdom Scale (Webster, 2003). The purpose of this study was to identify teacher quality variables that can predict school equity in the third grade reading passage rate at the school building level. In the present study, the operational definition of equity is the difference (or gap) in passage rates between those who may struggle academically in reading and their respective peers. The use of a dry electrode (DE), which does not rely on electrolytic solution, may circumvent potential disadvantages of a wet electrode (WE). The accuracy of the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal, provided by the electrode, is vital. Purpose: This study examined post-activation potentiation (PAP) and its effect on performance during sprint swimming. Following resistance exercise, the muscles are in a potentiated, as well as a fatigued state. Potentiation dissipates faster than fatigue, creating a window of opportunity for possible performance enhancement. It was hypothesized that (1) there will be an improvement in sprint performance as a result of a PAP loading protocol, and (2) that there will be a significantly greater improvement in males as a result of a PAP loading protocol.
