This research study was completed to explore the perceptions of teachers who have experienced online and hybrid teaching platforms in the United States. The purpose of the study focused on the satisfaction and success of students from the viewpoint of the teacher. Social Interdependence Theory, and Social Constructivist provided the theoretical framework for the study. The theories guiding the study include the Collaborative Learning Theory and Developmental Learning Theory. The research utilized interviews, focus groups, and questionnaires. Given the high remediation rate in math, reading, and writing of high school seniors who matriculate to college campuses in the United States, educational leaders have explored ways to address and decrease the need for remedial courses at the postsecondary level. Many K-20 leaders have developed programs and courses to bridge the gap between secondary and postsecondary education, but high remediation rates continue to exist. This mixed-methods study targeted one semester of 428 graduate-level students in the fall of 2016 who completed, or did not complete the five quizzes in a non-mandatory, online orientation to determine the impact of the orientation from enrollment through first-course retention. From the total population of 428 graduate-level students’ contact information, 53 students were not found in any orientation, but were listed as completing their first course, and were removed, resulting in 375 students who received a weekly email over a five-week period with a link to voluntarily participate in the study. According to Saenz and Ponjuan (2009), “Latino males are effectively vanishing from the American higher education pipeline” (p. 54). Despite a steady increase of Latino students enrolling over the past several decades, the problem remains that Latino male student persistence and completion rates are not keeping up proportionally with other student population groups (Castellanos, Gloria, & Kamimura, 2006).
