Teaching Self-Esteem To Improve Performance In Eighth Grade Basic Earth Science, J Mark Huffines

Low performance in a basic eighth-grade earth science class was addressed by a one-class-period per week self-esteem unit presented by the writer and daily positive self-concept reinforcement methods implemented by the regular classroom teacher. Students were presented concepts of self-esteem such as "self-talk,” “irrational beliefs,” “setting and attaining goals,” and “positive relationships” and participated in discussions concerning their feelings about themselves, school, families, and others. There was a standardized measure of self-esteem pretest and posttest, and student performance was measured via comparison of their earth science grade average between the first and the tenth week. A Structured Writing Program To Improve Fluency And Attitudes Of Seventh Grade Students In A Basic English Program, Janifer Gorney

The intent of this practicum was to increase writing fluency and improve writing attitudes exhibited by a group of seventh grade students with Yaqui and Hispanic backgrounds. During a period of 16 weeks, a writing unit was implemented consisting of twenty structured activities to guide students in presenting their ideas and to increase their chances for success. As students' fluency increased, the patterns and models given became less structured so that students used more of their own ideas. Evaluation was conducted through the use of Quality Writing Guidelines as well as student and parent follow-up surveys. Results indicated increased levels …

Through the data from surveys, interviews, research, discussions, with administrators at the district level in the schools, the author, with the help of task committee, develops an (ESE) Exceptional Student Education Substitute Teacher Handbook. The handbook includes the role and responsibility of ESE substitute teachers, ESE terminology, a brief overview of each exceptionality, class operation, behavioral management, first aid activities for short and long-term assignments, substitute teacher checklist, and forms and reports. The same professionals as listed above reviewed the handbook, were surveyed at the end of this project period, and gave a 100% census that the handbook would be …

A program introduced by the author was developed and implemented to provide the school and community with An Outdoor Environmental Education Center and supportive curriculum. This program was implemented to satisfy a recommendation in the Pinellas County Elementary Schools Educational Specifications manual which called for such a center in the construction of new schools. There was also a request from the faculty to enhance the environmentally rich campus of the school with this education center for the use of school and community.
