An Examination Of The Relationships Among Locus Of Control, Role Variables, And Perceived Job Satisfaction, Glenn Ellis Liddell

Dissertations

The relationship among locus of control, role conflict, role ambiguity and job satisfaction were examined for chief housing officers of member institutions of the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International with a resident population of under 1,000.

The literature review revealed that high levels of role conflict and ambiguity are related to low levels of job satisfaction and that locus of control affects perceived role conflict, role ambiguity and job satisfaction. Internals (those who believe their fate is controlled by themselves) experience less role conflict and ambiguity and more job satisfaction then do externals (those who believe their fate …

This research was undertaken in order to clarify the relationship between guided imagery and the control of food and liquid intake by hemodialysis patients. There have been a number of studies dealing with the negative psychological states experienced by hemodialysis patients. A behavioral manifestation of these psychological states is the problem of maintaining proper food and liquid intake and this is a major problem for most patients.

One technique used by individuals to cope with negative psychological states and to learn healthy behaviors is guided imagery. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relaxation technique coupled with …

The Relationship Between Conflict-Communication Values And The Relationship Between Principals' Conflict Management Effectiveness And Involvement Of Teachers In Decision Making In Small High Schools In Michigan, Michael Kenneth Ryan

Dissertations

Due to the ever-increasing complexity of the social, financial, technical, and political environment in which schools must function, teachers have become more and more involved in the decision-making process in many schools. As teachers participate more in decision making, conflicts may arise. As these conflicts are managed, conflict-communication values may be an integral part of such management.

The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine the relationship between principals' effectiveness when dealing with conflicts and the principals' willingness to involve teaching staff in decision making. Investigations regarding the relationships between opposing communication values were also conducted.

The methodology used …

The Comparison Of Achievement Of Weekend Course Student Groups And Concurrent Course Student Groups Of Nazareth College Management Division, Norm Woodin Dec 1984

The Comparison Of Achievement Of Weekend Course Student Groups And Concurrent Course Student Groups Of Nazareth College Management Division, Norm Woodin

Dissertations

Record numbers of nontraditional students are enrolling in colleges today. These students are being actively recruited in an effort to overcome a decrease in enrollments caused by the declining size of the pool of potential traditional 18-year-old students. To accommodate these nontraditional students, colleges have had to adjust their traditional class meeting time schedules. One such class meeting time schedule has been developed where the class meets in large blocks of time on weekends. Many educators have questions about the academic credibility and worth of this nontraditional weekend class meeting schedule. This question became the basis for a research study. …

Effect Of Father-Presence And Father-Absence On The Self-Concept Of Black Males In Special Education And Regular Education Classes, Queen Esther Woodard Dec 1984

Effect Of Father-Presence And Father-Absence On The Self-Concept Of Black Males In Special Education And Regular Education Classes, Queen Esther Woodard

Dissertations

This study compared the self-concept of Black males residing in father-present and father-absent low socioeconomic status homes, who were between the ages of 8-12, and who were enrolled in emotionally impaired, or regular education classes. Literature indicated that since 1970, the number of children reared in one-parent homes has increased by over 60%, with over 90% of these children living with their mothers. This changing lifestyle has prompted researchers to investigate the effects of father-absence on children; especially on boys.

It was hypothesized that self-concept would be influenced by father status, chronological age, and class placement. These three independent variables …

Monitoring Progress Toward Independent Silent Reading, Lilian H. Franc, Jeannette Hildrebrandt

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In an effort to gain a greater understanding of how children make the transition from reading word for word orally to becoming independent silent readers this study monitored the development of fluent oral reading of beginning readers, recorded progress related to the children's ability to use a modified cloze procedure as an indication of their perception of reading as a meaning gathering process, charted children's ability to write a complete sentence independently, and observed children as they made voluntary decisions to read a trade book silently.

Using Observation To Assess Young Children's Reading Attitudes, Olivia N. Saracho

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The checklist presented was derived from a study based on Rowell's (1972) conclusions: (1) the children's behavior indicates their attitudes; (2) an observer can objectively record this behavior with the appropriate instrument; and (3) the format of the instrument should provide the observer with the opportunity to assess the children's reactions to their reading experiences. based on these conclusions, the Preschool Reading Attitudes Observation Checklist (PRAOC) was constructed to assess young children's observable behaviors in reading.

Approaches And Methods For Reading Specialists: A Continuing Debate, Mark E. Thompson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The power of technology is a challenge to humanistic concerns and forms the basis of the continuing debate, i.e., how should we use our educational technology and how do we keep it under control? There are many examples of raw technical power going haywire. For educators at all levels, technology must be under human control and carefully applied.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study determines if second grade children, who have been identified as having possible listening comprehension problems and language deficiencies, demonstrate improved reading performance with an integrated reading-language treatment approach. A quasi-experimental design included sixteen children in the experimental group and nineteen subjects in the control group. Six operationally defined language behaviors were studied during eleven weeks of treatment. the data were interpreted to imply that certain aspects of an integrative reading-language approach were effective for reading instruction.
