Wayne State University’s Digital Learning and Development Environment was a research and development project aimed at developing a prototype for a systematic approach to digital learning using image repositories. The repositories used in the project were two of the Wayne State University Library System’s (WSULS) Digital Collections: Virtual Motor City and Digital Dress. The Collections are web portals providing universal access to digitized objects of cultural history from dispersed holdings of WSULS’s institutional partners. Motivational Profiles And Their Associations With Achievement Outcomes, Bo Shen, Nate Mccaughtry, Jeffrey J. Martin, Mariane Fahlman

With the belief that theoretical integration in motivation may help us better understand motivational behavior, we designed this study to explore adolescents’ motivational profiles and their associations with knowledge acquisition, leisure-time exercise behaviors, and cardiorespiratory fitness. Middle school students from a large urban inner-city school district (N = 603, ages 12–14) completed questionnaires assessing motivational constructs and leisure-time exercise behavior. Knowledge and cardiorespiratory fitness were also assessed with a knowledge test and the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run (PACER) test, respectively. Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) are becoming a widespread means of facilitating learning. The Moodle VLE is one of many technology tools that enable and support online learning. It is a user-friendly, free, opensource tool used to deliver instruction online and to supplement face-to-face learning.

The Education Library at Wayne State University has a long and storied history. From its beginning at the Detroit Normal School to its final merger with the general library, the Education Library has been at the heart of not only Wayne State University, but also in the development of the College of Education. This paper chronicles the history of the library, and the people who created it, from its very beginning to its final place among the volumes of the Purdy/Kresge Library.

Child Welfare And Children In The Education System: Prioritizing The Need For Statewide Anti-Bullying Policies, Angelique Day, Suzanne Cross

This study was conducted to explore the responses of 380 students enrolled at Michigan State University who had experienced bullying in high school as victims, perpetrators, and witnesses. Findings included significant predictors of bullying behavior. For example, male students were more likely to bully than their female counterparts; and bystanders who witnessed bullying incidents were more likely to become both victims and/or perpetrators of bullying. The MSU students offered recommendations for policymakers to create anti-bullying legislation with enforcement guidelines and other methods of improving school culture to reduce future bullying incidents.

Faced with large scale instruction demands, librarians are turning to technology to maximize staff resources and extend the impact of instruction. In this presentation, participants will learn how to translate classroom instructional content into learning objects in order to make learning available to multiple users on the go. The authors will engage the audience in a series of presentations, demonstrations, interactive tasks, and discussion in order to learn how to create effective learning objects.

This is a report of one case of a design and development research study that aimed to validate an overlay instructional design model incorporating the theory of multiple intelligences into instructional systems design. After design and expert review model validation, The Multiple Intelligence (MI) Design Model, used with an Instructional Systems Design (ISD) Model, was tested for use by four practicing instructional designers. Instruction developed for learners using this model was then evaluated measuring post-test and attitudinal scores with 102 participants. The “issues and trends” graduate course at Wayne State University endeavors to prepare professionals who have a historical and philosophical grounding in addition to technical skills. In this course the definitions of educational and instructional technology that have emerged over the years are viewed as compasses, pointing to concepts and issues predominant in each historical period. AECT’s current definition book, Educational technology: A definition with commentary (Januszewski & Molenda, 2008) provides the core readings for this course. Specific issues and the class activities associated with each are discussed.
