"The preparation of youth to succeed in the world of work is an important objective of the American high school."1 Students enroll in high school distributive education to develop an employable skill. The instructional program provides students with a variety of learning activities related to their occupational goals.

Distributive education has expanded to serve the whole range of distributive occupations, after starting mainly as a means of training retail sales persons. An important characteristic of distributive education has been the necessity for rapid adjustment to the changing business conditions.

Work is an important aspect of the total life experience. It has been estimated that man spends a total of one-third of his waking hours each week engaged in some type of work.

As an important aspect of life in our culture, satisfying work contributes to man's sense of general well-being and feeling of personal worth. Work that is not personally satisfying tends to have the opposite effects. (25, p. 329)

LaSalle found that while automation is increasing at an even accelerating pace, little emphasis is apparent in high school curriculums on the significance of automated processes for prospective office workers. He further stated that business education departments should study local situations and prepare students to qualify for available data processing employment.

The need for data processing training in the Ogden area is evident in the frequent requests by local employers for people trained in data processing.

Statement of Purpose: The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to ascertain the value of the training received in the one-year shorthand program at the Cedar City High School, Cedar City, Utah, as indicated by the graduates of the program; and (2) to suggest ways in which the Cedar City High School business education department may improve the curricula insofar as the one-year shorthand program is concerned.
