A Study Of The Relative Importance Of Training On The Employability Of The Mentally Retarded As Rated By Employers And Educators In Cache County, Utah, John F. Hurst

Relative differences in attitudes between educators and employers concerning training of the mentally retarded within Cache County were studied by analyzing their responses to 40 questions dealing with Academic, Personal, Social, and Vocational Skills.

Academic Skills were found to show no statistical significance in terms of attitude differences expressed by educators and employers as they relate to successful employability criterion.

An Experiment To Determine The Effectiveness Of A Remedial Reading Program With Students At Utah State University, Judith J. Ivarie

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of 20 hours of remedial reading instruction as compared with 20 hours of vocabulary instruction on a select group of university freshmen in the Remedial English Program. Three measures of effectiveness used were comprehension, rate, and effective reading rate. The effective reading rate was determined by computing the arithmetic product of level of comprehension and rate of reading. The results indicated that for this particular population, using the materials and instructional techniques described, neither group increased reading rate at the .01 level of significance. The primary objective of this study was to survey the usefulness of the 4-H members' project manual according to the opinions of members, parents, and adult leaders in Cache County, State of Utah.

Two USU Extension Agents, 140 4-H members, 119 parents, and 30 leaders cooperated in this survey. A separate questionnaire accompanied by a cover letter by the Extension Agents and a letter of explanation by the author was sent to each person in the three categories mentioned. The Federal Government has placed stringent standards on the manufacturers of automobiles to control vehicle emissions. Few states standards have been set for used vehicles to insure the vehicle continues to meet this standard.

Studies have shown that vehicles that are properly tuned are emitting less harmful pollutants from the exhaust. Additional studies are needed to determine if cars are being adequately turned to meet exhaust emissions.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the needs of San Juan County, Utah, in regard to an overall program of vocational education including ancillary services and new facilities for an area vocational center. Literature was reviewed concerning the need for vocational education, recent developments and trends in vocational programs, and other refinements in educational theory which influence instruction. Several groups of people were surveyed to determine the needs and interests of area residents with special attention given toward the Navajo Indian population.

The purpose of this study was two-fold. The first was the development of environmental education field trip guides to areas in Cache Valley for teachers in grades three through six that would provide learning activities that cannot be structured in the classroom. Six field trip guides to areas of Cache Valley with accompanying activities and discussion questions were constructed. The guides were tested in the field by three groups of teachers and students and teachers not participating in the field test evaluated the guides for difficulties they would encounter in using the guides.

Since the Utah Governmental Immunity Act went into effect on July 1, 1966, the experience of Utah's school districts under the law was not known. For the purpose of determining the experience of Utah's districts in administering the law and to determine the adequacy of the law, this study was undertaken.

The problem for the study was the lack of research on the effect of the empirical replication technique on student closed-mindedness. The replication technique requires the student to repeat, or replicate, studies originally conducted by social scientists. In this sense, replication is roughly analogous for the social sciences to what laboratory experiments are for the natural sciences. Additionally, the relationship between college student adjustment-maladjustment and open-closed-mindedness were explored while controlling for sex and academic achievement.

The purpose of this study was to compare the relative effectiveness of teaching intermediate typewriting at Utah State University during the Spring and Fall Quarters, 1971, utilizing a system incorporating prepared video tapes with the conventional teacher presentation method.

There were 60 experimental and 60 control students used in the experiment. Those students in the experimental group received all their instruction via prepared video tapes while the control group received all their instruction in the conventional teacher presentation.

This research project was a study to determine the relationship of two characteristics--dogmatism and educational philosophy--to teachers' acceptance and understanding of the New Social Studies (NSS).

The sample consisted of 222 secondary social studies teachers from three counties in tho San Francisco Bay Area. Questionnaires were mailed to schools selected at random and were administered by an agent, in most cases, the department chairman, to all social studies teachers in the school, during a single administration period.

The first objective of this study was to investigate the adjustment of women during pregnancy through various indices, namely: level of anxiety, attitudes to pregnancy, and perception of body-image boundaries, and to investigate the relationship among these indices. A second objective was to determine if a significant rank order of values inferred through clothing exists among pregnant women, and to relate these values to the measures of adjustment. The comparison of women by trimester and gravidity on the measures of adjustment and the inferred values, was a third objective.

This study was undertaken to determine if sessions in discrimination tasks with the aid of instructional cues would influence the visual perceptual abilities of pre-school children. The research was conducted in the Child Development Laboratories at Utah State University. Twenty children were used--ten in the experimental group and ten in the control group. The ten children in the experimental group were given training in performing tasks that required ability in visual perception. The ten children in the control group received no such training.
