A Study Of The Homeroom Program In Three Senior High Schools In Utah, Ida D. Draayer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The function of the secondary school is to help each individual develop and direct all of his potentialities. It should seek to help boys and girls find their rightful places as citizens in a democratic world. The fact that each individual is different presents a distinct challenge, and the secondary school is capable of meeting this challenge of individual development if the homeroom functions as it should.

The Status Of The Elementary School Principalship In Utah, Sherman Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The aim of this study is to record the status of the elementary school principalship in the State of Utah during the 1951-1952 school year.

The problem arose from a situation in which the writer, as President of the Utah Elementary School Principal's Association, was continually asked questions pertaining to the status of this group, and because there was a scarcity of current information available upon which to base reliable answers to these requests.

This situation led to the formulation of the study herein presented--a survey of conditions as they existed in Utah during the 1951-1952 school year. It should …

Relative Curricular Emphasis In Some Utah High Schools During The 1941-1951 Years, Edward W. Payne

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

To have a sound and complete philosophy of education is a relative must for all people concerned with the teaching of children. Fortunate is the school whose administration and faculty have in common a functional definition of the term "curriculum" and its place in their total philosophy of education. The school program of only a few decades ago consisted of the strict disciplinary type of teaching, with only a few available subjects which were intended to develop the total capacities of the student. The new philosophy recognizes the variation in students as individuals. One must not assume that there is …

Revenue Trends And Sources Of Revenue In The Public Schools Of Utah Between 1916 And 1950, G. Frank Raymond

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the past few years revenue for the support and maintenance of public schools in Utah has become a subject of increasing concern and discussion. Considerable effort has been made on the state level in an attempt to equalize the financial programs among the school districts in the state. Much of this effort has placed its emphasis upon property tax as the major source of school revenue, both on the local level and the state level. Inflationary trends in the national economy have added to the aggravation of this problem. It has become increasingly necessary to seek additional revenue in …

A Comparison Of The Band And Orchestral Programs In The High Schools Of Utah, George D. Harris May 1952

A Comparison Of The Band And Orchestral Programs In The High Schools Of Utah, George D. Harris

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the schools of Utah, as elsewhere in the nation, a situation has arisen which is of vital importance to the continuance of orchestral music. We find, on the basis of casual observation, that the string instruments are not being taught on an equal basis with the band instruments. It is generally assumed that band and orchestra instruction are equally desirable in an instrumental program. Unfortunately, many school authorities are not aware of the necessity of such equal opportunities for school children and as a result we may find string music relegated to an insecure position in our educational system.

A Study Of The Need For Supervision Of Instruction In The High Schools Of Utah, Caseel D. Burke

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Supervision of instruction, in the schools of the United States, has developed through a long and arduous process to the position where it is today considered by our leading educators to be a vital part of the educational system. It has been used in varying degrees of intensity as a tool in helping education to achieve its goals, but seldom has it been utilized so energetically and so skillfully as to produce the best possible results. There is considerable evidence, that supervision, with its resultant beneficial effects, has been applied less vigorously in the secondary schools than it has in …

A Study Of Adult Reading In A Selected Rural County Of Utah, Lucy V. Heaton May 1948

A Study Of Adult Reading In A Selected Rural County Of Utah, Lucy V. Heaton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the most remarkable developments of the present age is the apparently large increase in the reading public. The vast output of reading materials being purchased would seem to be evidence that reading is playing an increasingly important part in the daily lives of most people. Magazines and other publications crowd our stores, our homes, our very tables; at first glance, one would think that reading matter usurps our attention, and that we have come to depend upon it. The modern reader glances at the label on a can to learn its contents and uses. He reads the weather …

Certain Factors In Relation To The Present Occupational Status Of Former All-Day Students Of Vocational Agriculture In Utah, Mark Nichols

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Vocational agriculture had its birth in Utah rural high schools in the spring of 1918. It is a program for training present and future farmers for proficiency in agriculture. The instruction in Utah, as in most states, has been devoted to the training of all-day (high school) students.

Since 1918 considerably over one million dollars of federal, state and local funds have been expended for all-day instruction in vocational agriculture in Utah. The primary objective of the program is to train these boys to become farmers or farm leaders. From time to time the following questions have been asked: Do …
