Effects Of Screen Time On Children's Brain Development: A Scoping Review, Niloofar Jannesar, Todd E. Davenport, Lindsay Gietzen
Pacific Journal of Health
In this scoping review, the effects of screen time on cognitive, linguistic, and social-emotional development in children were studied by examining peer-reviewed articles published between 2018 and 2023. A total of 17 peer-reviewed articles were used in the study. The research reported that screen media provide a learning avenue, though it could be detrimental when children spend their time watching more than appropriate screen media. Furthermore, the study indicated that excessive screen media use may harm children’s executive function, which affects academic performance and language development. Related studies have also shown a correlation between excess screen use and problems like …

Doctor Of Physical Therapy Students’ Experience With Microaggressions In The Clinic: A Call To Action, Jocelin T. Friedman, Todd E. Davenport
Pacific Journal of Health
As Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students fulfill off-campus clinical experience requirements at healthcare institutions, they are mentored by clinical instructors who are employees of said healthcare institutions. Clinical instructors, patients, or other staff members there may commit microaggressions against physical therapy students with varying subject matters, intentions, and effects on the students. Microaggressions are brief verbal humiliations which may or may not be intentional, but nonetheless convey derogatory slights or insults towards a target group. This article explores DPT students’ real-life experiences with microaggressions within the clinical education realm and the challenges a Director of Clinical Education faced in …

From Antagonist To Protagonist: Shifting The Stories To Support Gen Z Students, Eileen K. Camfield, Leslie Bayers
From Antagonist To Protagonist: Shifting The Stories To Support Gen Z Students, Eileen K. Camfield, Leslie Bayers
Academic Affairs Faculty and Staff Articles
This article explores prevalent stories about “Gen Z” students that unintentionally undercut both their success and learner-centered pedagogies. The authors consider how those beliefs might be reframed to serve all learners more effectively. We also explore how the racial reckoning, health pandemics, social unrest, and additional compounded traumatic events of 2020 complicated stereotypes about college-aged youth and magnified the ever-present need for more inclusive, flexible, and compassionate teaching approaches. We now have an opportunity to build on the lessons of 2020 and expand the lenses through with we consider our students’ visible behaviors and invisible experiences. We offer a rationale …

Student Physical Therapists’ Perceptions Of A Novel, Small-Group Presentation Method In The United States: A Cohort Study, Bhavana Raja, Leslie Bayers, Lott Hill, Alicia Rabena-Amen
Academic Affairs Faculty and Staff Articles
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to explore perceptions of student physical therapists of a new, small-group presentation model called Presentation-Station-Rotation (PSR). Our hypothesis is that the PSR format will be a more effective, interactive, and stimulating mode of delivery than large group presentations. Method: Thirty-six first year student physical therapists were divided into groups of three students to give a presentation about their clinical experience. Presenters rotated to two other groups to present for three repetitions; listeners heard six different presentations. Thematic analysis was conducted on the questionnaire completed by the students regarding their experiences of the PSR …

A historic bill aims to ban prejudice based on caste system, practiced for centuries in the Indian subcontinent, in the state of California - proposed by State Senator Aisha Wahab.
Californians for Caste Equity - SB 403 - the state's Senate Judiciary Committee voted in favor of the legislation, sending it on to the next committee for consideration. If passed, the bill could make California the first state in the nation to make caste bias illegal by adding it as a protected category in the state's anti-discrimination laws.
The bill was proposed by State Senator Aisha Wahab, the first Muslim …

To continue our conversation and readiness in this critical time for higher education, the following questions are kept in mind: If the Supreme Court does away with race in admissions in colleges and universities around the nation, what does this decision mean for Pacific? And, how do we collectively center anti-racism in our all efforts?
Join me for the final installment of: Equity-minded leadership in a post affirmative action environment on Tuesday, February 28 from 12-1pm on the Stockton campus (in the X-space, first floor of the library across from the Cube, and on Zoom).

Examining Attention To Leadership When Hiring School Administrators In A High Poverty, Ethnically Diverse School District: A Case Study, Veronica A. Tigert
Examining Attention To Leadership When Hiring School Administrators In A High Poverty, Ethnically Diverse School District: A Case Study, Veronica A. Tigert
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed methods case study was to understand the hiring practices of a school district when considering a principal and how the school district attends to leadership within those hiring practices. The central premise of the study was leadership matters and is second to teaching in student achievement. However, the historical record paints a picture of less than adequate attention to effective hiring practices and a limited scope when addressing leadership. A small school district in California was selected to participate in the study. The design incorporated mixed methods to analyze the hiring practices through a survey …
“I’M Listening, Auntie” A Study On The Experiences Of Black Women Earning A Doctorate Degree In Education At A California State University, Parker Rugeley-Valle
“I’M Listening, Auntie” A Study On The Experiences Of Black Women Earning A Doctorate Degree In Education At A California State University, Parker Rugeley-Valle
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Black women face barriers to higher education that include systemic racism and sexism that lead to self–doubt, discrimination, and familial and community support. They battle barriers to and within academia through the intersectionality of their sex and racial identity groups. As a response to the barriers they face in higher education, the purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of Black women navigating a doctoral program in education at a California State University. To explore the experiences of the participants, I used a qualitative study with a Heideggerian phenomenological approach and a Black feminist lens. A three–question interview, …

Writing As Transformation: An Action Research Study On Trauma-Informed Curriculum, Nena L. Weinsteiger Guzman
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Trauma exposure is endemic, and this study seeks to address childhood trauma in a compassionate and restorative manner. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are serious childhood traumas that manifest as toxic stress which can damage the developing brain of a child and affect overall health. The implications are expressed dualistically: academic performance of youth is subdued & diminished, and behavioral interactions can range from unreceptive to erratic and aggressive. Trauma exposure is a predictor of adverse outcomes, which range from higher rates of suspension, expulsion, and incarceration, to dire outcomes, such as lower life expectancy and quality of life. Streamlining trauma-informed …
Identifying Success Strategies For Hmong American Students In Higher Education, Jason Xiong
Identifying Success Strategies For Hmong American Students In Higher Education, Jason Xiong
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Hmong Americans' postsecondary completion rates remain low when compared to other Asian ethnic groups. As the Hmong population continues to grow, so does the need for intervention to increase the total number of postsecondary graduates. Many Hmong Americans are first-generation college students and continue to face challenges and barriers that prevent them from being successful in higher education. “Forty-seven and a half percent of Hmong adults (25 years or older) reported having attended college, but not earning a degree” (National Commission on Asian American and Pacific Islander Research in Education, 2011). Without a college degree, Hmong Americans face limited resources …
Relationships Between K-12 In-Service Teachers’ Personal Environmental Education Teacher Efficacy, Environmental Identity, And Concern For Implementation Of California’S Environmental Principles And Concepts, Dean Matthew Reese
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Significant environmental impacts such as climate change, reduction in biodiversity, increasing food scarcity, impacts on water supply and availability, and exacerbation of human health problems are occurring and are expected to increase. Despite these environmental challenges the teaching of California’s environmental literacy standards, the California Environmental Principles and Concepts (CA EP&Cs), in the K-12 public education system is infrequent and inadequate. The purpose of this study was to use a mixed methods approach to examine relationships between environmental identity (EI), personal environmental education teacher efficacy (PEETE), and peak stage of concern (SOC) for implementing CA EP&Cs for K-12 in-service teachers …
Lifting As We Climb: Effective Mentoring Methods For Black Women Who Aspire To Senior Leadership Roles In Higher Education, Janine Mixon
Lifting As We Climb: Effective Mentoring Methods For Black Women Who Aspire To Senior Leadership Roles In Higher Education, Janine Mixon
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 125,485 Black women earned a bachelor’s degree in 2019 in comparison to 70,909 in 1999. As the number of Black women on college campuses have increased, the number of Black women in senior leadership roles have remained stagnant. It is important for higher education institutions to find ways to increase the number of Black women in senior leadership roles because diverse staff and faculty not only increases students’ success but the institutions’ success. One of the ways in which colleges and universities can support the career advancement of Black women is to …
Continuation Teachers' Perceptions Of Grading Practices, Tobi W. Page
Continuation Teachers' Perceptions Of Grading Practices, Tobi W. Page
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The history of grading practices is riddled with inequities, dating to the inception of the traditional grading system, which was designed to rank and sort. Despite expanding public education to include all members of society, traditional grading practices have yet to evolve in response to the growing demand for equitable and student-centered grading practices. Many alternative education schools have a non-traditional grading structure in response to the students’ learning needs. With an understanding of the history and challenges of alternative education settings, this study sought to add the perceptions and practices of continuation high school teachers to the current body …
Resilience Of The Black Woman: Thriving Through Storytelling, Kimberly R. Miller
Resilience Of The Black Woman: Thriving Through Storytelling, Kimberly R. Miller
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The study explored how storytelling develops resilience in Black women, enabling them to thrive after overcoming adversity. Storytelling can be conducted in a variety of ways, such as through writing, interaction with others, and self-analysis, however, this study will focus on the value of informal oral storytelling through the interactions with others. Studies reveal that Black women are disproportionately impacted by inequities concerning equal rights, employment, equal pay, education, discrimination, affordable healthcare and housing, criminal justice, and voting rights. Despite these inequities, Black women are significant contributors to the workforce, economy, and society, demonstrating resilience. There is limited research that …
