Barriers To Implementation Of Energy Conservation Opportunities In Food Service Facilities, Dorothy Susan Mitchell Dec 1981

Barriers To Implementation Of Energy Conservation Opportunities In Food Service Facilities, Dorothy Susan Mitchell

Doctoral Dissertations

In 1978, expenditures for energy resources represented approximately 8% of the total operating budget in food service facilities (Barclay, 1979; Skaggs, 1980). Due to increasing energy costs, erratic availability of energy supply, environmental restrictions, federal and state regulations, energy management programs take on special significance. Energy management programs, which can include energy audits, frequently lead to a 10-30% reduction of energy consumption and subsequent cost reductions (Snyder and Symonds, 1977; Shirley and Turner, 1978). The audit permits an opportunity to determine potential energy conservation opportunities (ECO's). The purposes of this study were to determine the extent of exposure to energy …

An Investigation Of The Differences In Religious Conflict And Anxiety Among Religiously Fundamentalist Students Enrolled In Hiwassee College, Johnson Bible College, And The University Of Tennessee, Knoxville, Clarence Victor Mccall Jr. Dec 1981

An Investigation Of The Differences In Religious Conflict And Anxiety Among Religiously Fundamentalist Students Enrolled In Hiwassee College, Johnson Bible College, And The University Of Tennessee, Knoxville, Clarence Victor Mccall Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in religious conflict and anxiety among religiously fundamentalist students enrolled in three institutions in East Tennessee. It was felt that such an inquiry would provide insight into the difficulties encountered by the religiously fundamentalist student as that person moves and functions in higher education.

The subjects were 301 freshman students. The study was accomplished in two phases. Phase one involved meeting with freshman English classes at two of the institutions and introductory Sociology classes at the other institution and asking the students to provide certain biographical information as well as …

A Comparative Investigation Of Selected Attitudes Of Dual Career Couples In Which The Wife Earns More/Earns Less Than The Husband, Sandra Shoun Dec 1981

A Comparative Investigation Of Selected Attitudes Of Dual Career Couples In Which The Wife Earns More/Earns Less Than The Husband, Sandra Shoun

Doctoral Dissertations

The major purpose of this study was to investigate attitudes of dual career couples in which the wife earned a higher income than the husband compared to couples in which the wife earned a lower income than the husband. The sample was comprised of dual career couples in the East Tennessee area: 79 couples in which the wife earned the higher income and 105 couples in which the wife earned the lower income.

The dependent variables used in the study included self-esteem, marital satisfaction, job satisfaction, and three dimensions of gender roles. The independent variable, income, was used to classify …

Some Interrelationships Between Acetaminophen Detoxication And Dietary Sulfur Sources, Julie Catherine Hodges Dec 1981

Some Interrelationships Between Acetaminophen Detoxication And Dietary Sulfur Sources, Julie Catherine Hodges

Doctoral Dissertations

This investigation was conducted to study the effect of acetaminophen on sulfur constituents in livers of rats fed various diets differing in respect to inorganic sulfate and methionine. Sodium 35SO4 = was administered to label ester sulfates, 35S-cysteine to label ester sulfates and neutral sulfur compounds other than methionine and 35S-methionine to label ester sulfates and neutral sulfur and by a precursor relationship give an indication of the effect acetaminophen may have on the remethylation pathway. Time of isotope injections were varied so that immediate synthesis of sulfur compounds could be evaluated as well as the …

The Effect Of Protein And Caloric Restriction And Age On The Rate Of Liver Protein Synthesis Of Male Rats, Connie Watkins Bales Aug 1981

The Effect Of Protein And Caloric Restriction And Age On The Rate Of Liver Protein Synthesis Of Male Rats, Connie Watkins Bales

Doctoral Dissertations

The liver protein synthesis rate and protein content were studied in male Wistar rats fed low-, medium-, and high-protein diets at 2 calorie levels for 1 (12 animals per dietary group) or 2 (36 animals per dietary group) years. Ad libitum-fed (A) groups were offered semisynthetic diets containing 12, 20, or 28% casein. Restricted-fed (R) rats fed diets containing 18, 30, or 42% casein were provided two-thirds of the mean quantity of diet consumed by A groups and thus consumed the same amount of protein but one-third fewer calories than their ad libitum-fed controls. The fractional rate of liver protein …

Consumer Education Knowledge Possessed By Selected Four-Year And Community College Students In Tennessee, Homer Ronald Moser Jun 1981

Consumer Education Knowledge Possessed By Selected Four-Year And Community College Students In Tennessee, Homer Ronald Moser

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to construct valid, reliable consumer education objective tests and to determine whether consumer education knowledge of community college students and four-year student who had taken a consumer education course were better informed than those college students who had not taken the course. Also, an effort was made to determine if there were certain variables which influence a student's personal finance knowledge. The variables that were studied were: (a) age; (b) sex; (c) work experience; and (d) major.

Procedures of Study. As a means of gathering the necessary data, it was necessary to examine 513 …

An Interdisciplinary Model For The Treatment Of Obesity In Young Girls, Annell St. Charles Mar 1981

An Interdisciplinary Model For The Treatment Of Obesity In Young Girls, Annell St. Charles

Doctoral Dissertations

The effectiveness of an interdisciplinary model in treating obesity in three young girls, ages 4 to 8, was studied over a 20-week period. Three subjects were selected from physician referrals and newspaper advertisement respondents. All of the subjects were clinically obese as indicated by weight and fatfold measures and had no apparent medical complications which would contraindicate treatment. Two of the subjects were white and one was of mixed racial background. One or both parents were obese in all subjects but none had obese siblings. The mother of each subject was the primary family member attending meetings.

Treatment effects were …

An Effect Of Cyclotetraphosphate, Cyclotriphosphate And Hexametaphosphate On Glycogenesis In Rat Liver, Virginia Ann Laiming Mar 1981

An Effect Of Cyclotetraphosphate, Cyclotriphosphate And Hexametaphosphate On Glycogenesis In Rat Liver, Virginia Ann Laiming

Doctoral Dissertations

In order to investigate the effect of dietary phosphate additives on glycogenesis, rats were fed standard diets supplemented with cyclotetraphosphate, cyclotriphosphate or hexametaphosphate at a 0.1% level of phosphorus. A control group was fed orthophosphate at a similar level. After two weeks half of the animals received a test dose of 14C-glucose administered by stomach tube. After 2-1/2 hours their livers were removed to determine the incorporation of 14C-glucose into glycogen and total glycogen recovered. The remaining animals were sacrificed and their livers were removed to determine glycogen synthetase activity. Animals fed cyclotetraphosphate exhibited lower levels of glycogen …
