Responsible citizens need the agility to navigate a changing information landscape. Intentionally designing learning experiences that integrate accessible Information Literacy (IL) skills for all students is a crucial step towards educational justice, a paramount responsibility in the democratic mission of our institutions. With this goal, the University of Rhode Island’s Office for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning has partnered with instruction librarians since 2018 in developing and facilitating a High Impact Teaching Seminar for faculty. The Ace Your Course (AYC) Challenge is a series of reflective surveys intended to extend students’ evaluation of metacognitive learning strategies, based on the work of Dr. Saundra McGuire. The survey questions used for different stages of the Challenge can be found here. These surveys were developed as part of an initiative from the Office for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning and through collaboration with the Academic Enhancement Center to support the development of self-regulated learning through student reflection on metacognition.

According to Nielsen Media Research, in 2005 the Food Network was available in 88 million households and has increased it viewership ever since. Some shows aired on this channel however are missing one very important component: nutrition education. Those who watch these cooking programs many times attempt to imitate what they see. This replication is important because it shows the audience is actively listening and interested in the subject. As thousands of immigrants and refugees are entering the U.S., and our school systems, each year, English as a second language (ESL) classes are becoming more and more necessary. As a future ESL teacher, it is crucial that I am aware of the wide variety of school environments from which they are coming. My curiosity brought me to Altamira, Dominican Republic, where I was able to experience first hand the school environment of my potential future students.
