UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The curriculum developed in this project was designed to meet the needs of primary students in the areas of self-concept, decision-making, and locus of control. It provides activities that enhance these areas in the hope of positively influencing school achievement. The related literature and research review attempts to show the interrelationships between self-concept, school achievement, decision-making, and locus of control.
The project consists of 10-15 minute activities that do not require lengthy teacher preparation or numerous materials. The activities take into consideration Piaget's and Kohlberg's stages of development for kindergarten through second grade students. The content of the activities is …
Sixth-Grade Map And Globe Skills Curriculum, Karen Ann Miles-English
Sixth-Grade Map And Globe Skills Curriculum, Karen Ann Miles-English
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There has been much concern recently about the lack of basic map and globe skills among America's youth. Map and globe skills are a basic tool of social studies used throughout the rest of students' academic, professional and personal lives. These skills incorporate the development of problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The focus of this project was to develop a map and globe skills curriculum for teaching these skills to sixth-graders in Putnam County, Florida, when they first encounter daily social studies classes.
The Effects Of Freewriting On High School Students’ Attitudes Toward Writing, Dana L. Thomas
The Effects Of Freewriting On High School Students’ Attitudes Toward Writing, Dana L. Thomas
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This paper investigates the hypothesis that freewriting, when used as part of the writing process, will lead to more positive attitudes toward writing in a sample of advanced tenth grade students. An additional issue focuses on the level of positive attitudes of males when compared to females. Two intact classrooms taught by one teacher wrote weekly papers. The experimental group wrote freely, while the control group was restricted in topic choice, length and form of their writing. The experimental group received positive comments on the content of their writing, but the control group received standard error corrections on their writing. …

Developing Laboratory Activities To Increase Student Motivation In Earth Science, David R. Holley
Developing Laboratory Activities To Increase Student Motivation In Earth Science, David R. Holley
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Teachers for generations have struggled with the challenge of motivating students to learn in their classes. Literature suggests that a positive way to increase student motivation and academic achievement in science is with the laboratory experience. With the lack of adequate laboratory space in our schools, teachers are having to "make do" in science classes with limited space and budget. A need exists for 9th grade Earth Science laboratory activities that meet county course objectives and yet are simple enough to be used in a classroom setting, thereby eliminating the need for extra expenses for the science department. This project …
Teacher Perspectives Of Causes Of Attrition, Jacquelyn Rae Sneddon
Teacher Perspectives Of Causes Of Attrition, Jacquelyn Rae Sneddon
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study attempted to identify causes of teacher attrition by using a survey distributed to 74 certificated teachers at Loretto Elementary School in Jacksonville, Florida. Seven possible causes of teacher attrition, identified in the review of the related literature, were worded in statement form for use in the survey. Each possible cause was stated from three different perspectives: as it applied to the individual respondent, to teachers as a whole, and to the general public. The teachers were then asked to indicate agreement or disagreement on a four-point Likert scale. Conclusions suggested that inadequate salary and physical harm were the …
