The Effect Of Classroom Management Training And Active Or Information-Based Follow -Up On Inexperienced Teachers' Perceived Classroom Behavior Management Effectiveness, Diana L. Casey
Student Work
Inexperienced teachers' perceived classroom effectiveness of their planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities domains were analyzed to determine the effects of active follow-up compared to information-based follow-up of classroom management training ( N = 50). Inexperienced teachers enrolled in I Can Do It Classroom Management Training were randomly assigned to active follow-up to the training (n = 24) or information-based follow-up to the training ( n = 26). As reflected by the pretest and posttest evaluation form measuring their perceived effectiveness in the domains of planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities, teachers participating in …
The Effectiveness Of A School-Wide Differentiated Home Room Academic Extension Re-Teaching Initiative On The Achievement And Proficiency Categories Of 8th-Grade Students With Varying Levels Of Cognitive Skills, Tamara J. Williams
Student Work
The purpose of the study was to measure the effectiveness of a school-wide differentiated home room academic extension re-teaching initiative on the academic achievement and criterion-referenced assessment proficiency categories of 8th-grade students with varying levels of measured cognitive skills. Achievement measures were reading and math criterion-referenced assessment scores, core subject grades, and the reading and math Terra Nova Normal Curve Equivalent Norm Referenced Achievement Test subtest scores. At the conclusion of the research year 20 students moved into the highest measured criterion referenced reading test proficiency group (beyond proficient) and 33 students moved into the highest measured criterion referenced math …

Grounded Technology Integration In Mathematics, Neal Grandgenett, Judi Harris, Mark Hofer
Grounded Technology Integration In Mathematics, Neal Grandgenett, Judi Harris, Mark Hofer
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
Teachers today can choose from a variety of technologies for teaching mathematics. Drill-and-practice software, virtual manipulatives, real-life data sets, interactive geometry programs, graphing calculators, robots, and computer-based laboratories are just a few of the options available. But it can be difficult for mathematics teachers to know just which technologies to choose to support student learning in particular lessons.
One way to help teachers integrate technologies effectively is to match technology integration strategies to how teachers plan, rather than asking teachers to plan instruction that exploits the opportunities offered by particular educational technologies. For more information, see our previous article ( …

Racial Isolation And Student Achievement, Peter J. Smith
Racial Isolation And Student Achievement, Peter J. Smith
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
Achievement data of African American, Hispanic American, and Caucasian students from racially segregated and racially integrated settings in an urban, Midwestern school district were analyzed to determine the effect of racial isolation on achievement within each racial group. In the district studied, achievement of students from segregated schools was not significantly different from the achievement of same race students from integrated schools. The study’s results should encourage district officials and instructional leaders to look at those factors that have a positive impact on student achievement regardless of the level of racial isolation.

Teachers who seek a career as a school administrator envision their leadership will be transformational and charismatic--and are often surprised by the conflict and confrontation that is an inevitable part of school administration (Hall, 2008; Hartzell, Williams, & Nelson, 1995; Sigford, 2005). Just as preservice teachers imagine a future career where all children love learning and respect teachers, only to find a reality that is less utopian (Su, 1992), this disconnect between the ideal of the vision and the reality and the new job often produces disappointment and shock (Senge, et al., 2000). The reality is that successful school leaders …

Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
In our technology rich world, the educational areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) play an increasingly essential role in developing well-prepared specialists for the 21st century workplace. Unfortunately, interest in theses areas has been declining for a few decades. Various innovative educational initiatives in formal and informal learning environments have been undertaken nationally to attempt to encourage STEM-oriented learning. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the particular program described in this paper focuses on middle school youth in non-formal learning environments. The program integrates educational robotics, Global Positioning System (GPS) and geographic information system (GIS) technologies to provide …
The Effect Of An In-Class Behavioral Intervention Plus Differentiated Instruction Program On The Achievement And Behavior Outcomes Of Verbally Disruptive 8th-Grade Students With And Without Co-Occurring Reading Delimitations, David R. Lavender
Student Work
The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of an in-class behavioral intervention plus differentiated instruction program on the achievement and behavior outcomes of 8th-grade students with verbally disruptive behavior and co-occurring below grade level reading test scores compared to 8th-grade students with verbally disruptive behavior and grade level reading test scores. Statistically significantly improved posttest reading vocabulary and reading total Normal Curve Equivalent scores and between class tardy frequencies supported the use of an in-class behavioral intervention program that allowed students with verbally disruptive behavior and co-occurring below grade level reading test scores to reclaim themselves after …
