"If You Build Them Up, They Will Stay": The Role Of Recognition And Feedback On Student Retention, James R. Jones
Marketing and Management Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
While such stratagems are certainly well founded, and have achieved varying degrees of success, it may be that a more fundamentally vital area of examination is being largely overlooked, namely the impact of the high school experience. One of the critical problems facing many institutions of higher learning is that of student retention. While this issue is an important one to address across the entire student population, it has become particularly acute as relates to "minority" pupils. Accordingly, many colleges and universities have developed strategies to try to arrest enrollment attrition. These strategies typically include such mechanisms as tracking programs, …
Strategic Directions For Service-Learning Research: A Presidential Perspective, Judith Ramaley
Strategic Directions For Service-Learning Research: A Presidential Perspective, Judith Ramaley
Higher Education
Service-learning can be viewed as a form of pedagogy designed to enhance learning and promote civic responsibility as well as one of a set of strategies to link the capacity of a college or university to the needs of society. A commitment to service-learning can become the avenue for a larger transformational change agenda by providing a focus and a reason to consider significant changes in campus priorities, faculty roles and rewards, resource utilization and university-community relationships. The case is made for the role of the scholar/practitioner president and the importance of a legitimate scholarly base to effect institutional change, …

Change As A Scholarly Act: Higher Education Research Transfer To Practice, Judith Ramaley
Change As A Scholarly Act: Higher Education Research Transfer To Practice, Judith Ramaley
Higher Education
Achieving transformational change is a scholarly challenge best dealt with by practicing public scholarship, which is modeled by the leader and encouraged in other members of the campus community. Like all good scholarly work, good decision making by campus leadership begins with a base of scholarly knowledge generated and validated by higher education researchers.

Stone Soup Community Development: Sustainability And Americorp*Vista Projects, Amy Bonn
Curriculum
The Stone Soup Sustainability research project is an evaluation of how AmeriCorps*VISTA (VISTA) projects address continuity and viability. The research examines what elements are important to a project's sustainability and what resources are needed to improve efforts for stakeholders (Corporation for National Service staff, VISTA supervisors, VISTA Leaders and members). Using Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodology, stakeholders were interviewed and asked how they defined a successful project, what strategies they used to develop such a project and what tools would be useful to them. From these findings, the Stone Soup Sustainability series was developed. The series includes a supervisor's guide …

Learning In Deed: Service-Learning And Preservice Teacher Education, Jeffrey B. Anderson
Learning In Deed: Service-Learning And Preservice Teacher Education, Jeffrey B. Anderson
Service Learning, General
Progressive teacher education programs face a pair of daunting yet crucial tasks. New teachers must be prepared to function effectively in schools as they exist today. They also must be educated to take a leadership role in the improvement and restructuring of P-12 education to meet students’ and society’s needs more fully. Service-learning appears to have considerable potential as a method to achieve both these goals.
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation believes that meaningful service to the community, combined with curriculum-based learning, builds stronger academic skills, encourages lifelong civic commitment, and improves workplace and personal development skills among youth. Educators lead …

Using Web Pages To Teach Mathematical Modeling: Some Ideas And Suggestions, Elliott Ostler, Neal Grandgenett
Using Web Pages To Teach Mathematical Modeling: Some Ideas And Suggestions, Elliott Ostler, Neal Grandgenett
Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Mathematical modeling can perhaps be best defined as “the process of scientific inquiry” for mathematics. This is obviously a comfortable mode for teachers of science, but is rarely seen in the mathematics classrooms of today. This paper explores the possibilities of using interactive web pages to help facilitate an understanding of practical applications based mathematics. Because the scientific process is emphasized as the general operating framework, situations where students can hypothesize and experiment, and create data tables are most valuable. Special emphasis is placed on the fact that students and teachers both need to re-conceptualize effective mathematics instruction in order …

Mathematical Modeling Within A Technology Based Learning Environment: Some Principles For Adaptive Instruction, Neal Grandgenett, Elliott Ostler, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, Scott Henninger, Char Hazzard
Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
This paper describes a set of research based instructional plans being developed by a multidisciplinary team of researchers at the University of Nebraska within a National Science Foundation Proof-of-Concept Grant. The project is seeking to establish a prototype effort for teaching mathematical modeling within a technology based learning environment, which includes components of adaptive instruction for the student. Seven curriculum based design principles for the adaptive instruction that are being followed in the development of the project are described in the paper as they relate to research on effective mathematics instruction, and in particular the enhancement of mathematical modeling activities.

Bayac-Service Learning Project, (Slp) Year V, Bay Area Youth Agency Consortium
Project Summaries
Every Year, BAYAC askes each regional team to work together to design and implement a community service project that exemplifies the BAYAC Mission and program objectives. While Corps Members and participants work towards achieving program objectives by providing tutoring, mentoring and health education services at their specific agency placements, these team projects give them the opportunity to collaborate as an entire group and truly experience teamwork. As we begin our fifth year of operation with a larger, integrated structure, we encourage collaborated work on these projects across programs. When possible, mentors and tutors are asked to participate in service projects …

Community Service Learning Packet, Martin Kimeldorf
Community Service Learning Packet, Martin Kimeldorf
Curriculum
This learning packet contains a set of exercises designed to stimulate the student's thinking about their community and the value of community service. It begins with a personal definition of the word "community." From this definition, the student then gathers information about the school community. Hopefully, by attending school club meetings students will increase their sense of belonging and learn about options for volunteering at their campus. The notion that young people are selfish and hedonistic is examined in a section about stereotypes and biased news reporting. To break up the "worksheet" sequence two movie assignment guides are provided, where …
