Architecture And New Urbanism’S Relationship To Biomimicry And Floral Design, Alycia Timmerman
Architecture And New Urbanism’S Relationship To Biomimicry And Floral Design, Alycia Timmerman
Honors Theses
The craft of floral design is classified as an art and a science. Similarly, architecture is rooted in the two disciplines. After conducting research and exploring biomimicry through the design process, it became evident that the process of design for architecture and floral design are similar. This relationship can also be extended into the field of planning and the New Urbanism movement. This study explores the integration of floral design and biomimicry with architecture and New Urbanism at the scale of the building and city block.

Planning With Curriculum Materials: Interactions Between Prospective Secondary Mathematics Teachers’ Attention, Interpretations And Responses, Lorraine Males, Ariel Setniker
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This paper reports a study of four prospective secondary mathematics teachers’ (PSTs) attention to different sets of curriculum materials when planning lessons. Specifically, it addresses how this attention interacted with their interpretations of and responses to the materials and how the curriculum elements and format of each set of materials influenced the interaction. Attention, interpretations, and responses were analyzed by capturing quantitative data from eye tracking glasses the PSTs wore and qualitative data from coding the transcripts from two staged planning interviews. Results indicate that PSTs’ interpretations and responses were initiated by their attention and that the curriculum elements and …
Understanding The Role Of Institutional Repository In Digital Preservation In Academic Libraries: A Review Of Literature, O. P. Saini
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
One of the leading objectives of the libraries is to provide the latest and timely information to its clientele and keep them updated with the new arrivals related to their subject areas. However, a limited storage capacity of libraries is throwing a challenge before librarians from the beginning of libraries. The latest developments in the libraries for information management, preservation, and dissemination involve a high rate of computer technologies. Institutional Repository (IR) is a new breed which has the potential to store any amount of information in little space and preserve it for a long-term perspective. Therefore, many of the …

An Interpretive Plan Guide For Wilderness Park In Lincoln, Nebraska, Rachel J. Ward
Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects
Wilderness Park, located in Lancaster County, Nebraska, is a public park of unique ecological and historical value to the city of Lincoln and to the surrounding region. The natural and historical features of the park present an opportunity to communicate environmental and historical topics that are relevant on local, national, and global levels, as well as inspire a lively sense of pride in the community. The problem is that many topics relevant to Wilderness Park are not currently being interpreted at the park, and that there are relatively few interpretive resources available to park visitors.
The purpose of this project …

Building Organizational Capacity For Enrollment Performance Measurement: A Mixed Methods Investigation, Lynda Ruth Wallace-Hulecki
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The use of enrollment performance measurement systems can enable the provision of intelligence information to inform strategic decision-making and the effective management of enrollment. A review of the literature indicated that the development of enrollment intelligence systems was a nascent area in which only a select few institutions had successfully developed applications. In addition, no published models or guidelines were found for assessing an organization’s capacity for success in developing advanced enrollment performance measurement capabilities linked to enrollment performance improvement.
The purposes of this study were twofold: (a) to identify the culture value orientations and organizational capacity conditions that existed …

Preservation Ethics In The Case Of Nebraska’S Nationally Registered Historic Properties, Darren Michael Adams
Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation focuses on the National Register of Historic Places and considers the geographical implications of valuing particular historic sites over others. Certain historical sites will either gain or lose desirability from one era to the next, this dissertation identifies and explains three unique preservation ethical eras, and it maps the sites which were selected during those eras. These eras are the Settlement Era (1966 – 1975), the Commercial Architecture Era (1976 – 1991), and the Progressive Planning Era (1992 – 2010). The findings show that transformations in the program included an early phase when state authorities listed historical resources …

Ec95-745 Managing Livestock Odors: Principles, Assessment And Planning, Richard K. Koelsch
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Odors associated with livestock manure represent a growing challenge for livestock producers. Livestock production trends such as more animals per farm and expanded reliance upon manure storage have added to the odor muisance. Implementing other environmentally friendly practices such as manure nutrient management and maintenance of surface crop residues for soil conservation also have resulted in additional odor challenges.
Odors originating from livestock wastes are a common source of irritation between producers and neighbors. Confrontations may lead to more stringent local zoning regulations, greater scrutiny of other farm environmental issues, and litigation.
This publication summarizes the underlying causes of livestock …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Conserve water in a landscape by following a prescribed sequence in designing and managing the site.
Beauty and utility traditionally have been the purposes of home landscapes. Because water -- in both quality and quantity -- is becoming a limited resource, conservation has become a third goal. The homeowner can achieve all three by using careful, comprehensive planning.
You can reduce water consumption by 40-80 percent by following an appropriate sequence in designing and managing your site.

G89-947 Buying Meat By The Serving, Dennis E. Burson
G89-947 Buying Meat By The Serving, Dennis E. Burson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Buying meat by the serving rather than by the pound can save you money. Determining cost per serving is covered here.
Smart shoppers use cost per serving rather than price per pound in making meat selection decisions. Price per pound can be misleading because all cuts will not yield the same number of servings per pound.
Although some boneless cuts may cost more on a per pound basis, they may be more economical due to less waste. The amount of bone and waste fat determines the number of servings of cooked meat a cut will yield. Cost of the edible …

Ec86-113 A Guide For Planning And Analyzing A Year-Round Forage Program, Steven S. Waller, Lowell E. Moser, Bruce Anderson
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Efficient grazing management programs cannot succeed without proper stocing rates. However, proper stocking rate alone will not insure a successful grazing program. Successful grazing management only occurs when all factors affecting production are manipulated properly: season of use; kind, class, and/or combination of animals; grazing distribution; grazing program; fertilization; pest control; and water management as well as stocking rate. The following suggestions in this circular are a guide to initial planning of new pastures and the modification of existing grazing programs.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
This NebGuide discusses the major items to consider when using concrete for swine facilities to help assure that quality concrete is obtained.
Concrete is widely used to construct swine production facilities. Versatility, durability, and relatively low cost are characteristics that make it ideally suited for floors, walls, foundations, pen dividers, and manure storage structures. With appropriate design, concrete can even be used for the building roof and feeders. There are, however, certain major items to consider to help assure quality concrete and years of reliable service regardless of the specific use.
