Avoidance In Disordered Eating : The Roles Of Overvaluation Of Weight And Shape And Repetitive Thinking., Anne Christine Bjerg Dec 2014

Avoidance In Disordered Eating : The Roles Of Overvaluation Of Weight And Shape And Repetitive Thinking., Anne Christine Bjerg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Disordered eating is associated with several negative outcomes and often lead to diagnosable eating disorders. The coping strategies used by those with disordered eating may contribute to such consequences. Past research has found experiential avoidance to be common among those with disordered eating to escape uncomfortable internal experiences. The current study suggested that repetitive thinking and overvaluation of weight and shape are two such mechanisms by which avoidance of negative core beliefs, in particular, is achieved. It was hypothesized that eating disorder symptoms, negative core beliefs, experiential avoidance, overvaluation of weight and shape and repetitive thinking would all be positively …

Job Satisfaction Of Professional Staff And Administrators Within The Associated Colleges Of The South : A Study Of Herzberg’S Duality Theory Of Motivation In Higher Education., J. Patrick Noltemeyer 1979- Dec 2014

Job Satisfaction Of Professional Staff And Administrators Within The Associated Colleges Of The South : A Study Of Herzberg’S Duality Theory Of Motivation In Higher Education., J. Patrick Noltemeyer 1979-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the ability of four groups of factors to predict the job satisfaction levels of fulltime, exempt, professional staff at four institutions of higher education within the associated Colleges of the South consortium. Based on a similar study of professionals in higher education conducted by Smerek and Peterson (2007), this study used hierarchical multiple regression to determine the amount of variability explained by each group of factors according to the conceptual model. The conceptual model for this study, as well as the study by Smerek and Peterson, was based on the theory of Frederick Herzberg (1959), an industrial …

Cultural Capital And The Family-School Mesosystem : A Multiple Groups Analysis Of School-Based Parent Involvement Types And Their Relations With Early Student Achievement., Emily R. Dickinson 1974-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation study explored the relationship between school-based parent involvement and early reading outcomes by positing that different types of parent involvement activities reflect access to different forms of cultural capital and therefore should be analyzed as separate constructs. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) techniques were used to establish the factor structure underlying measures of school-based parent involvement available in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Cohort of 2011 (ECLS-K: 2011). Also of interest were the variations in the amount of participation in different types of involvement between families from various sociocultural backgrounds, as well as the …

Secondary Student Outcomes And Perspectives On A Multiple Pathways Approach To Education : Engagement, Achievement, And Transitions., Lisa-Anne Ferris Dec 2014

Secondary Student Outcomes And Perspectives On A Multiple Pathways Approach To Education : Engagement, Achievement, And Transitions., Lisa-Anne Ferris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Career and Technical Education, earlier known as Vocational Education, has been formally part of public education since 1917. Federal policies have been used to support linking academic and vocationally-based curricula to give secondary and postsecondary students practical work experience within schools to prepare them for the workforce (Gordon, 2008). The current policy, The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, or Perkins IV, is the most recent policy to integrate academic and vocationally-based curricula’s using a career pathway model under Programs of Study (POS) (USDE, 2013). POS are career pathways that students choose in the beginning of their high …

Graduate Students Who Are Part-Time Workers : How Does Occupational Stress And Gender Role Affect Job Satisfaction?, Megan Church-Nally Dec 2014

Graduate Students Who Are Part-Time Workers : How Does Occupational Stress And Gender Role Affect Job Satisfaction?, Megan Church-Nally

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Job satisfaction and occupational stress have consistently been examined in professionals for decades due to its link to turnover and reduced productivity. Similar concepts have been investigated in undergraduate students, but there is paucity of research of attrition in graduate students. This gap persists despite estimates that 50% of graduate students fail to graduate (Cassuto, 2013). Such attrition is not due to deficiency in academic skills, as Carroll, Ng, and Birch (2009) reported that personal reasons were cited more than academic concerns for attrition. The purpose of this dissertation was to address this job satisfaction and occupational stress gap with …

Reading Achievement In A Large Urban School District : An Analysis Of The Effects Of Four Reading Programs On The Reading Growth Of Four Reading Ability Groups., Deborah Patrice Anderson Dec 2014

Reading Achievement In A Large Urban School District : An Analysis Of The Effects Of Four Reading Programs On The Reading Growth Of Four Reading Ability Groups., Deborah Patrice Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reading underachievement among adolescent students, specifically in urban areas, has been well documented in the literature. This unfortunate reality may point to two problems in America. Many schools possess neither the skill to prepare students for college and career nor possess the capacity to prepare them for a workforce that is becoming more and more high tech and in need of literate workers. Some schools are at a loss when it comes to teaching students to think of literacy as a critical tool for self-advocacy and identity development. Sociocultural perspectives on literacy view reading as an activity that develops as …

Transfer And The Commodification Of Practice., Kenneth Andrew Smith Dec 2014

Transfer And The Commodification Of Practice., Kenneth Andrew Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation engages in a close reading of the research in composition on transfer, a concept that refers to how the practices learned in one situation influence what a person can do in a future situation. In the studies that have appeared over the last two decades, the results have indicated that not much transfers between writing courses and future contexts, whether they be disciplinary courses or professional workplaces. Yet, despite the increasing prominence of transfer research, little time has been spent discussing the uses and limitations of the concept. To better understand its growing popularity among researchers, I examine …

An Evaluation Of A Brief, Theatre-Based Intervention For The Prevention Of Adolescent Cyberbulllying And Suicide., Kathryn Laurel Hopkins Dec 2014

An Evaluation Of A Brief, Theatre-Based Intervention For The Prevention Of Adolescent Cyberbulllying And Suicide., Kathryn Laurel Hopkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Quality program evaluation investigates both the process and the outcomes of an intervention in order to accurately determine its effectiveness and impact. In the present study, the effectiveness of CHOICES, a brief, applied-theatre intervention that addresses cyberbullying and suicide was evaluated. The fidelity of implementation of the intervention was assessed to determine whether the delivery of CHOICES was consistent with the original goals of the program, as well as consistent across multiple deliveries. Investigation of the fidelity of implementation revealed that CHOICES was not implemented with high levels of fidelity. The study also determined whether exposure to CHOICES led to …

Student Loan Default: Do Characteristics Of Four-Year Institutions Contribute To The Puzzle?, Karen L. Webber, Sharon L. Rogers Nov 2014

Student Loan Default: Do Characteristics Of Four-Year Institutions Contribute To The Puzzle?, Karen L. Webber, Sharon L. Rogers

Journal of Student Financial Aid

College student debt and loan default are growing concerns in the United States. For each U.S. institution, the federal government is now reporting a cohort default rate, which is the percent of students who defaulted on their loan, averaged over a three-year period. Previous studies have amply shown that student characteristics are strongly associated with educational debt and one’s ability to repay student loans; however, few studies have deeply examined the relationship between institutional characteristics and student loan default. This study examined characteristics of 1,399 four-year notfor-profit U.S. institutions and found significant differences in the 2010 federal student loan default …

Do You Know What You Owe? Students' Understanding Of Their Student Loans, Emily A. Andruska, Jeanne M. Hogarth, Cynthia Needles Fletcher, Gregory R. Forbes, Darin R. Wohlgemuth Nov 2014

Do You Know What You Owe? Students' Understanding Of Their Student Loans, Emily A. Andruska, Jeanne M. Hogarth, Cynthia Needles Fletcher, Gregory R. Forbes, Darin R. Wohlgemuth

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Using a data set that augments a student survey with administrative data from the Iowa State University Office of Financial Aid, the authors posed two questions: Do students know whether they have student loans? Do students know how much they owe on outstanding student loans? We used logistic and ordered logit regressions to answer these questions. Results suggest that although the majority of students are aware that they owe on student loans, many underestimate the amount they owe. One eighth of students in the current study reported no student debt when, in fact, they had a loan. Over a quarter …

A Comparative Study On Need-Based Aid Policy In Higher Education Between The State Of Indiana And Taiwan, Ching-Hui Lin, Don Hossler Nov 2014

A Comparative Study On Need-Based Aid Policy In Higher Education Between The State Of Indiana And Taiwan, Ching-Hui Lin, Don Hossler

Journal of Student Financial Aid

The question of how the government can best support access to postsecondary education has become a critical issue for education policymakers around the globe, as the practice of cost sharing for funding postsecondary education has been more widely adopted. In this context, this study explores the approaches to implementing current need-based financial aid policies in higher education in Indiana and Taiwan using G.Z.F. Bereday’s (1964) comparative method as the framework. Using a comparative cross-national perspective, the authors explored cost sharing, Rawls’ theory of social justice, and the economic principles of horizontal and vertical equity.

This review revealed that need-based aid …

The Effectiveness Of Extended Orientation First Year Seminars : A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis., Matthew S. Berry Aug 2014

The Effectiveness Of Extended Orientation First Year Seminars : A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis., Matthew S. Berry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has shown that while nearly 40% of all students who enter postsecondary institutions leave without ever obtaining a degree, nearly two-thirds of students who persist to their second year eventually obtain a degree. Given the impact of the first year, a multitude of initiatives designed to promote first-to-second year persistence developed. The most popular initiative has been the first year seminar and particularly the extended orientation model of first year seminar. Given its prominence in the undergraduate curriculum, a large body of research has developed in recent decades investigating the first year seminar. However, the predominance of this …

Role Models, Women's Leadership And Careers Of Women In The Management Of Professional Baseball., Maki Itoh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Very few women hold leadership roles in North America professional sports. Major League Baseball (MLB) ranks lowest for women in leadership positions among the five major North American professional sports leagues, reinforcing the idea that professional baseball is especially male-dominated. This study surveyed all women working in management positions in professional baseball, at both MLB and minor league levels. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship of role models with role model existence, role model quality, gender career barriers, business leader self-efficacy, cognitive leader self-efficacy, and future leadership expectations of women working in management positions in professional …

Dogmatism, Coping, And Spirituality : Predicting Mental Health Among The Religious And The Secular., Jonathan T. Moore Aug 2014

Dogmatism, Coping, And Spirituality : Predicting Mental Health Among The Religious And The Secular., Jonathan T. Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Religiousness has frequently been found to positively predict numerous types of beneficial mental health variables in previous literature. These results have often been inferred by scholars to mean that secular groups have poorer levels of mental health despite rarely including secular populations in studies. An ideological diverse sample of 4,667 respondents provided usable data in the current correlational study that measured the relationships between general dogmatism levels, existential belief strength, spiritual coping, spiritual harmony (i.e., the degree to which one lives in accordance with their self-defined values) and six indicators of mental health. The sample was comprised mainly of agnostic, …

Answering The Call : An Examination Of Multicultural Competence Among Academic Advising Professionals., Tia Noelle Dumas Aug 2014

Answering The Call : An Examination Of Multicultural Competence Among Academic Advising Professionals., Tia Noelle Dumas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examined the relationship between background characteristics and multicultural competence among academic advising professionals at a large, public, urban research institution in the southern United States. It begins with a brief overview of ethical principles in academic advising, focusing on the responsibility academic advisors have to advise all students equitably. The dissertation study is guided by a conceptual framework grounded in student departure theory (Tinto, 1975, 1987, 1993), learning-centered academic advising (Lowenstein, 2005), culturally sustaining pedagogy (Paris, 2012), and multicultural competencies in helping and advising (Pope, Reynolds, & Mueller, 2004) to argue for an understanding of culturally responsive advising …

Recognition Of Romantic Relationship Danger Signs., Kelley Quirk Aug 2014

Recognition Of Romantic Relationship Danger Signs., Kelley Quirk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Romantic relationships are a strong source of personal well being for many individuals, with unhealthy partnerships promoting greater distress and dissatisfaction. Several variables have been identified in the literature as “danger signs” which seem to predict current and/or future relational discord. These danger signs are expressed within couple communication (such as invalidation or escalation) and behaviors (such as physical violence and controlling actions). However, little is known about individual variability in the ability and willingness to accurately identify these danger signs. The current study explores this gap in the literature. Specifically, seven video vignettes of interactions between two partners (actors) …

Culture First, Customers Second : The Case Of An Organizational Learning Culture In A Successful Small Business., Devon A. Twyford Aug 2014

Culture First, Customers Second : The Case Of An Organizational Learning Culture In A Successful Small Business., Devon A. Twyford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a case study of a learning culture in a successful small business. It begins with a discussion of the importance of small business to the U.S. economy. The high rate of small business failure is highlighted, along with several factors known to contribute to failure. Of those factors, the limited resource environment within which most small businesses operate is discussed. The reality of limited resources influences small business owner-managers to adopt a risk-averse and conservative approach to business operations. This risk-averse and conservative approach often impacts owner-managers’ attitude toward employee learning. A historical overview of the field …

Financial Decisions Among Undergraduate Students From Low-Income And Working-Class Social Class Backgrounds, Krista M. Soria, Brad Weiner, Elissa C. Lu Jul 2014

Financial Decisions Among Undergraduate Students From Low-Income And Working-Class Social Class Backgrounds, Krista M. Soria, Brad Weiner, Elissa C. Lu

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Low-income and working-class students face many challenges related to the costs and affordability of higher education; yet, little is known about the financial decisions made by these groups of students while they are enrolled in higher education and how their decisions might differ from middle/upper-class students. Using data from students enrolled at six large, public research universities in 2012, researchers examined 16 different financial decisions of undergraduate students. Results suggest that low-income and working-class students are more likely to make decisions that could negatively impact their immediate academic experience, serve as disruptive barriers to success, delay or prolong graduation, or …

A History Of Financial Aid To Students, Matthew B. Fuller Jul 2014

A History Of Financial Aid To Students, Matthew B. Fuller

Journal of Student Financial Aid

The history of financial aid in higher education covers a board range of philanthropic-, scholarship-, and loan-based approaches. This article comprehensively covers the history of American financial aid to students from influences of European medieval institutions to contemporary aid systems. A broad history of financial aid is covered, revealing an evolution from a system primarily based upon local philanthropic efforts, to a more formal system of scholarships and grants, to, finally, a complex federal system of loans. As the history of financial aid is chronologically covered, attention is paid to describing how financial aid policies and practices were a response …

The “Gainful Employment Rule” And Student Loan Defaults: How The Policy Frame Overlooks Important Normative Implications, Gabriel Serna Jul 2014

The “Gainful Employment Rule” And Student Loan Defaults: How The Policy Frame Overlooks Important Normative Implications, Gabriel Serna

Journal of Student Financial Aid

In this essay I examine the empirical considerations and normative aspects that such a proposal engenders and how the policy frame, while useful, misses important normative implications for aid policy. Specifically, I will analyze the policy’s proposed goals, and the normative implications that adoption of such measures entails; which have been omitted from the policy debate. I will also consider how empirical or economic implications have taken center stage in the process of defining the policy’s image and the potential negative consequnces this creates.

Debt And College Students' Life Transitions: The Effect Of Educational Debt On Career Choice In America, Yeseul Choi

Journal of Student Financial Aid

This study reviewed the literature to investigate the impact of student loans on career choices, in order to provide implications for policy makers and researchers with respect to student loan policy. For this purpose, empirical studies in peer reviewed journals since 1985 were analyzed. This review explored the results of empirical studies regarding the relationship between debt and career choice in three areas: 1) general career choice, 2) specialty choice in particular fields such as law and medical school, and 3) the decision to pursue an advanced degree. The results suggest that educational debt generally has no clear negative effect …
