The Role Of Human Ficolin-2 During Invasive Pneumococcal Disease, Allison Marie Brady
The Role Of Human Ficolin-2 During Invasive Pneumococcal Disease, Allison Marie Brady
All ETDs from UAB
Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is a significant human pathogen that typically resides in the nasopharynx of humans. The major virulence factor of pneumococcus is its capsular polysaccharide, of which it can express over 90 unique serotypes. However, there is great disparity in which serotypes colonize or cause disease, though the reason for these differences are not well understood. Serotype 11A is one such serotype that frequently colonizes the nasopharynx of children, but rarely causes disease. Interestingly, serotype 11E, a variant of 11A, varies only in the O-acetylation of a galactose residue in its polysaccharide repeating unit. This difference in structure is …
John Keats And The Perceiving Subject In The Fall Of Hyperion: Poetics, Symbol, And Play, Clara Delene Busby
John Keats And The Perceiving Subject In The Fall Of Hyperion: Poetics, Symbol, And Play, Clara Delene Busby
All ETDs from UAB
For my thesis, I claim that John Keats's poem, The Fall of Hyperion: A Dream, exemplifies the aesthetic theory of German philosopher/poet/playwright Friedrich Schiller as explicated in On the Aesthetic Education of Man in a Series of Letters. I am analyzing Keats's poem through Samuel Taylor Coleridge's theory of the symbol as asserted in The Statesman's Manual . . . in conjunction with Schiller's aesthetic letters, and my claim is that Keats's poem illustrates Schiller's theory of the play-drive. What Schiller terms as the play-drive is what happens cognitively when we make and/or encounter the beautiful in art. He claims …

The purpose of the PRIMO Study was to compare two diets differing in carbohydrate and fat content in improving metabolic outcomes, and to achieve weight loss in overweight pre-pubertal girls aged 7-11. The inclusion criteria for the …

An Evaluation Of The Healthy Eating Active Living (Heal) Alabama Program For Prevention Of Childhood Obesity Among Fifth Grade Students, Kelley Devane Hart
All ETDs from UAB
Childhood obesity is a major public health concern. The multiple effects of obesity in childhood are long-reaching. Since weight loss and maintenance are very difficult, prevention of obesity is important. Schools have been identified as an important environment for obesity prevention interventions since most children spend a large portion of the day at school. The purpose of this secondary data analysis was to determine if the Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Alabama intervention improved weight status, fitness levels, and health knowledge and behaviors. A 2-by-2 repeated measures ANOVA was performed to determine whether differences exist between intervention and comparison students …

Exploring The Impact Of Youth Participation In Community Service On Health Behaviors, Kymber Nigel Williams
All ETDs from UAB
Although the majority of adolescents in the United States are considered healthy, they continue to engage in a myriad of health risk behaviors that may manifest into adulthood. The prevalence of adolescent health risks is well documented. Prosocial behaviors (i.e., community service, volunteerism) may contribute to reducing risky health behaviors among adolescents, but this connection has yet to be solidified. Previous research has suggested that volunteerism may have beneficial and developmental outcomes for adolescents. However, the relationship between adolescent community service participation and improved physical health outcomes has not been fully explored. The purpose of this study is to examine …

In this research study, the relationship between organizational health and student achievement of 28 urban Title I elementary schools in Alabama was examined. A correlational design was used to analyze the results from the electronic survey Organizational Health Index for elementary schools …

The Role Of Children's Books In Classroom Discourse And Pedagogy, Deborah Bailey
All ETDs from UAB
This qualitative case study explored the factors that contributed to how typical book reading practices and the time spent on book reading were implemented during the school day. However, little research has focused on actually identifying how or if books are used during the course of a classroom day. This investigation was conducted in three elementary schools within two school districts in the southeastern United States. Study participants included eight elementary teachers who taught a …

How Children Quantify Area, James Wilder
How Children Quantify Area, James Wilder
All ETDs from UAB
The Common Core State Standards (2010) requires the quantification of area with the formula for a rectangle, length multiplied by width. More specifically, according to the Standards, third graders are to find the area of a rectangle by tiling it and showing that the area is the same as it would be from multiplying the side lengths. Is this a realistic expectation for third graders? The present study focuses on how children quantify area after receiving instruction on length x width, when asked to compare two rectangles having different dimensions. Fourth, sixth, and eighth graders were interviewed to find out …

This was a case-study design of the various ways students represented fractions on number lines. Students responded to task-based interview questions based on identifying fractions as a number on the number line as well as equivalency and problem solving. The tasks were administered individually to 26 fifth-grade students over a 15-minute time frame in their respective schools. The two groups of 10-year-old students answered most questions in written form on pencil and paper. The students were often asked to explain how they arrived at an answer. Student performance was highest when instructed to plot ½ on a number line of …
