Surveys As Praxis: A Pilot Study On Transformative Learning Assessment With The Laboratory Experience Of The Theatre Of The Oppressed, Paolo Vittoria, Maria Rosaria Strollo, Sabra Brock, Alessandra Romano Jan 2014

Surveys As Praxis: A Pilot Study On Transformative Learning Assessment With The Laboratory Experience Of The Theatre Of The Oppressed, Paolo Vittoria, Maria Rosaria Strollo, Sabra Brock, Alessandra Romano

Graduate School of Business Publications and Research

Transformative learning has been important in the development of college and adult education since Jack Mezirow proposed it more than 40 years ago as a theoretical description of the steps learners undergo in changing their worldviews. From the educator’s perspective, transformative learning is when a learner is struck by a new concept or way of thinking and then follows through to make a life change; it supplements more common types of learning such as acquiring facts or learning new skills (Cranton, 2006) [1]. Little quantitative study has been made of the incidence of transformative learning or the ten steps predicted …

Issues Of Today's Online Education: Psychological Portrait Of The Problem Student, Anna Toom Jan 2014

Issues Of Today's Online Education: Psychological Portrait Of The Problem Student, Anna Toom

Graduate School of Education Publications and Research

The online problem student is one who fails to benefit from the modern learning environment based on the information technologies. The purpose of this work was to find out whether psychological characteristics helpful for identifying problem students in a traditional classroom are the same in a new learning environment. The study was conducted with 123 graduate students, who took Dr. Toom’s online psychology courses within three consecutive semesters of 2013. The research methodology included an analysis of the students’ coursework and academic performance within the semester and mathematical analysis of the collected data. According to the results, four psychological characteristics …

Pharmacy Students’ Performance And Perceptions In A Flipped Teaching Pilot On Cardiac Arrhythmias, Terri H. Wong, Eric J. Ip, Ingrid C. Lopes, Vanishree Rajagopalan

Faculty Publications & Research of the TUC College of Pharmacy

Objective. To implement the flipped teaching method in a 3-class pilot on cardiac arrhythmias and to assess the impact of the intervention on academic performance and student perceptions.

Design. An intervention group of 101 first-year pharmacy students, who took the class with the flipped teaching method, were supplied with prerecorded lectures prior to their 3 classes (1 class in each of the following subjects: basic sciences, pharmacology, and therapeutics) on cardiac arrhythmias. Class time was focused on active-learning and case-based exercises. Students then took a final examination that included questions on cardiac arrhythmias. The examination scores of the …

Teaching Critical Thinking To First-Year Medical Students Through Concept Mapping, Amina Sadik Jan 2014

Teaching Critical Thinking To First-Year Medical Students Through Concept Mapping, Amina Sadik

College of Osteopathic Medicine (TUN) Publications and Research

Helping students learn the basic sciences and demonstrating their importance in the practice of medicine presents a challenge for the majority of medical science educators. A curriculum change of medical biochemistry was implemented to include concept mapping as a visual strategy to enhance the analytical and critical thinking skills during clinical case-based workshops. A rubric was used to give detailed feedback and provide guidance to students. A number of clinical cases were judiciously selected to illustrate specific topics. Students meet with a faculty member to discuss the concept map prior to the workshop. During such meetings, all members are asked …

Bridging The Cultural-Linguistic Divide In The Standards-Based Classroom: Storytelling As A Reflective Form Of Academic Discourse, Ching-Ching Lin Jan 2014

Bridging The Cultural-Linguistic Divide In The Standards-Based Classroom: Storytelling As A Reflective Form Of Academic Discourse, Ching-Ching Lin

Graduate School of Education Publications and Research

In this paper, I theorize how Bakhtin’s dialogism – a sociocultural approach that views learning not as an individual cognitive achievement, but as a social practice informed by the complexity of human interaction – reconciles academic discourse and storytelling in a compelling way. As a literacy approach, storytelling is widely considered as an effective way to bridge the gaps between meeting the demands of the Standards-based classroom and fulfilling the needs of English Language Learners. However, under the current paradigm of education theorizing, personal testimonies were often dismissed as an invalid form of academic knowledge.

Conceptualizing cultural discourse as dialogic …
