ABSTRACT

This project is focused on using online materials to motivate beginning level adult ESL students. This project’s rationale was the great challenge that many educators faced during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. All courses have been moved online; both teachers and students feel anxiety about learning and staying healthy. In language study, when the language anxiety becomes higher, the study outcomes become worse. Stress impacts the learners’ affective filter, the mental block that impedes learners’ full use of comprehensible input. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of Black families raising young children during shelter in place orders and distance learning due to Covid-19. The study was conducted virtually through Zoom and Google form due to county shelter in place orders. Participants were recruited from the school in which the researcher worked. Through the use of virtual interviews, the five participants highlighted themes of reconnections, isolations, empowerment, family values and conversations. The lack of a standardized education for stroke coordinators focusing on The Joint Commission (TJC) standards and requirements in preparation for the stroke program disease-specific care (DSC) certification survey every two years has led to undue added stress prior to survey. The development of tools and resources has been identified to address the current educational gap in stroke coordinator orientation. This project addressed the gap by creating an online, self-directed learning module to assist the stroke coordinators in knowledge acquisition of the stroke standards and requirements.
