Over the past two decades, the geographic area served by the NH-ME LEND Program has experienced rapid growth of racially, ethnically and linguistically diverse populations, as has the U.S. in general. While the NH-ME LEND clinical and leadership placements provide opportunities for frequent contact with underserved populations, Maine trainees, in particular, have had few opportunities for training or fieldwork with culturally and linguistically diverse populations. Children With Disabilities Tend To Stay In A Highly-Resourced Early Head Start/Head Start Program Longer Than Children Without Disabilities, Alan Cobo-Lewis, Dale Walker, Noreen Yazejian, Shinyoung Jeon, Sandra Hone, Karen Stoiber, Diane Horm, Gabriela Guerrero, Donna Bryant

Using data from 21 Educare schools, the researchers measured the rate at which children from birth to kindergarten-age enter the school and rate at which they exit the school. Educare schools are highly resourced Early Head Start/Head Start programs targeting children at risk, especially children from low-income backgrounds. About 10% of the children have a disability. Results showed that children with a disability tended to stay in the program longer, especially when enrolled in Early Head Start.

Over the past two decades, Maine has experienced rapid growth of racially, ethnically and linguistically diverse populations, as has the US generally. Although Maine’s population is largely White (95%), children in Maine are disproportionately from minority populations; currently 9% of children in Maine are from a race other than White. With funding support from a Focused Assistance to Support Training Project (FAST) grant, the NH-ME LEND Program partnered with New Mainers Public Health Initiative (NMPHI) to develop and deliver parent advocacy training modules for Somali parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The month where we all celebrate the strong women in our society who have helped paved the way to get women to where we are now.In the academic world, it wasn’t until 1840 that the first American woman, Catherine Brewer Benson, graduated with an undergraduate degree from Wesleyan Collegein Georgia. It took another 26 years for a black woman to earn a degree, and over 30 years for the first woman to earn a Ph.D.

Marie Christiansen Mengers was born in 1905 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died in Orono, Maine. She was a professor of French at the University of Maine from 1947 until her death in 1965. Mengers was educated at the University of Nebraska, Wellesley College, Columbia University, and the University of Toulouse, France. She attended summer sessions at Harvard and Chicago Universities. Her doctoral dissertation was on the life of French symbolist poet Henri de Régnier. Before coming to UMaine, she taught at the University of Nebraska, the University of Wisconsin, and Queens College in Flushing, N.Y.

Raymond Henry Fogler was born in South Hope, Maine in 1892 and died in Exeter, Maine in 1996. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1915 and received a graduate degree from Princeton University in 1917. His commitment to the University spanned 80 years and he served as president of the Board of Trustees, the Alumni Association, University of Maine Development Council, and the University of Maine Foundation. The library at the University of Maine was named the Raymond H. Fogler Library in 1962.

Established in 1935 by University of Maine President Arthur A. Hauck, Maine Day was a day for students to plant trees, build sidewalks, paint fences, and generally improve the campus grounds. The purpose of Maine Day has evolved over time and in 1973 became a day for students, faculty, and staff to participate in general community service projects. Materials include newspaper clippings, scripts, photographs, correspondence, transparencies, and an audio tape from Maine Day 1965.

This record groups contains copies of various reports and presentations related to both internal and external reviews of Information Technology at the University of Maine System, starting in the late 1990s through to 2015. The Maine State College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts was established in 1865. The College opened on September 21, 1868. In 1897, the College changed its name to the University of Maine. A group of miscellaneous records regarding the history of the University of Maine from its founding. Items appear to have been curated and compiled over time by Fogler Library Special Collections staff to document key events, figures, and milestones in the University's early history. Most material is from the end of the Nineteenth century through to the mid Twentieth century.

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society was founded on May 11, 1929, in Austin, Texas, by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, with eleven other key women educators. Many new chapters in many states were formed in the following years.

In 1942, Nellie I. Gale, Grace Faulkingham Gilmore, Virginia D. Marston, Louise B. Miller, Carrie H. Rowe, and Dr. Edith M. Patch were initiated into Delta Kappa Gamma as National Members. In Augusta on June 19, 1943, these six national members along with nine other outstanding women educators from southern Maine became the Founders of Alpha Psi State Chapter.
