Social Care students undertake a research methods module with a focus on quantitative methods. A core aim of the module is for students to develop their research skills by applying them to a project. This paper will explore the student experience of engaging in this process and the impact on their learning and skill development. The impact on the students' engagement in the exploration of ethical issues and critical thinking is also explored. The project had three separate, linked objectives: (a) the development of a module in Research Methods which embraces an activity based approach to learning in a group environment;(b) to improve participation by all students and (c) to devise more rigorous and equitable assessment methods. This module was previously taught through a traditional lecture-based format. It was felt that student engagement was poor and learning was limited. It was believed that successful completion of the development of the module would equip students with a deeply learned battery of research skills to take into their further academic and professional careers. The goal of this project is to provide a framework for a revised delivery of Research Methods across the College of Business. This project considers a number of issues and misconceptions that needed to be overcome regarding the delivery of Research Methods (RM) as a module and the recognitions of RM as a discipline. This contribution reports on the teaching, learning and assessment of a Research Methods module on a Level 9 taught programme in engineering at DIT. The module was run in the 2008-9 and 2009-10 academic years. The module is a generic one, whose aim is to facilitate students in developing a comprehensive proposal for their engineering research project. A team approach was taken to module instruction. Students were assessed (at different stages during the module) by evaluation of a written research proposal planner document, a reflective PowerPoint presentation and a final written research project proposal. This session describes both the reasons for and the process of designing and delivering a Research Methods Module using a Problem-based Learning (PBL) approach in a Postgraduate Diploma in Third Level Learning and Teaching at a higher education institute in Ireland. The students who undertake this part-time Module are cohorts of academic staff (Faculty Members) in Higher Education (HE). They are hitherto referred to as participants. This module is one of eight offered on the PG Diploma, all designed and delivered using Problem-based Learning.
