Practitioner Research Projects
This project was driven by a motivation to be as fair as possible in the assessment of students' group work. Achieving fairness in assessment is a recurrent them in group project assessment literature (Nordberg, 2009). All authors of this report teach modules with group projects, and acknowledged that discrepancies often exist between a mark assigned to a group and an individual's contribution. Our aims were to (a) collectively enhance our understanding of the issues that need to be considered when assessing a group work project and (b) collectively build our confidence in approaches chosen to overcome these challenges. The findings …

Oakley et al. (2004) and Gibbs (2009) observe that owing to the extensive literature on group work, lecturers searching for a succinct guide on how to facilitate this activity effectively would find it challenging to digest such a large corpus. We extensively reviewed the literature in order to produce a quick and accessible guide for lecturers to use. It is our aspiration that this could be referred to when planning and facilitating group work projects with insights and recommendations informed by our research. Moreover, as this work draws on publications from educators in a wide range of disciplines, we expect …

Assessment & Feedback Cases
Students work in groups and design a collaborative Wiki (PBWorks) based on a chemical molecule of choice. The choice of molecule is restricted to ones supplied by the lecturer. The groups form on their own and the majority of the work takes place outside of contact hours. The lecturer can monitor student engagement and activity through the Wiki history. Mid way through the assessment period (week three of a six week assessment window), the academic provides written feedback on the progress of the students’ Wiki by posting to the Wiki. The best Wikis may be entered into an external competition …

Assessment & Feedback Cases
Working in groups of three or four final year students have to undertake a systematic review to answer a research question and then present their findings as a poster.

Assessment & Feedback Cases
Students work in groups in the microbiology lab carrying out structured tasks on a weekly basis. Completion of the tasks ultimately allows them to complete a project over several weeks. The tasks are based on the previously used lab manual. Each group is given a slightly different project to complete (eg different pathogens) however the tasks are similar, with minor modifications to suit the project. Students are given templates for SOPs and reports, and they learn to generate their own SOPs during the project. They decide as a group what tasks are required, and elect a supervisor to delegate tasks. …

Assessment & Feedback Cases
Students complete three projects. Two are group projects and one individual project. The group project clients are sourced by the lecturer from industry, the individual project client is sourced by the student. Teaching time is divided into lectures, informal assessment and summative feedback at various intervals. These projects are linked to different modules, Design (30 credits), Commercial Printing (5 credits) and Prepress Technology (5 credits), they also filter into Media Law (5 credits) and Strategic Marketing (10 credits). Students are assessed by completing a Group Project Report, Individual Log and an Individual Presentation which is filmed. The Individual Presentation is …

Integrated Project Delivery is a rapidly developing approach to Design and Construction. This approach uses business structures, new technologies, and newly developing practices to collaboratively utilise the talents and contributions of all participants in the Design and Construction process. This project replicated this approach by creating a collaborative project between the School of Construction and the School of Real Estate and Construction Economics. The term “collaborative learning” refers to a method of delivery in which students at various performance levels work together in small groups towards a common goal. The students were responsible for one another’s learning as well as their own. …
An Experiential Learning Approach: Implementing A Group-Based Research Project As The Main Learning Vehicle In A First Year Microeconomics Module, Joe Dennehy
Teaching Fellowships
The overall purpose of this Teaching Fellowship project is to determine whether a current bold-on continuous assessment research project can be developed further to become the main learning vehicle in a first year Microeconomics module. The main research objectives are: can a group-based research project become the main learning vehicle in a first year Microeconomics module?: can such a project provide the generic skills relevant to a modern society : can such a project be facilitated by a Wiki. There are two main sections to the extensive range of literature reviewed. One is that which considers the wide range of …

Conference papers
This paper examines a collaborative project between the department of Construction Management and Technology and the departme nt of Quantity Surveying at Technological University of Dublin. The term “collaborative learning” refers to an instruction method in which students at various performance levels work together in small groups toward a common goal. The students are responsible for one another’s learning as well as their own (Dillenbourg, 1999) The objectives of this collaborative project are: 1.Promote interaction between students from different but related courses. 2.Enhance student’s ability to think creatively, solve problems, and make decisions as a team. 3.Evaluate the benefits of using …

Many marketing students at undergraduate level are exposed to experiential learning in Years 3 and 4 where, through more varied pedagogies such as case studies and industry projects, they have a taste of real work marketing practice. It is often a challenge to engage students at second year where the theory and concepts of marketing are required to be taught, often employing a traditional passive learning paradigm (lecture based). The need to foster engagement early in a student’s learning is ever greater with a generation of students that want to construct knowledge socially and leverage Web 2.0 tools in their …
