Challenges Of Data Collection For Equality Between Women And Men: The Eut+ Alliance Case, Yvonne Galligan, Rositsa Velchikova, Deirdre Mcquillan

Papers

This paper provides a comparative analysis of gender equality figures between women and men for the partners of the European University of Technology (EUt+) alliance. A baseline template was developed appropriate for higher education institutions and influenced by categories of data collected for the ‘She’ survey. Results for a baseline year of 2019-20, and for some categories 2020-21 are illustrated in the paper. It is notable that average distribution hides significant variations between the eight institutions and these are explained. Notwithstanding, the trends are similar to the ‘She’ Figures and CESAER observations on technology universities. The proportion of women declines …

All Things Merge Into One, And A River Runs Through It: Exploring The Dimensions Of Blended Learning By Developing A Case Study Template For Blended Activities, Damian Gordon, Paul Doyle, Anna Becevel, Tina Baloh Jan 2022

All Things Merge Into One, And A River Runs Through It: Exploring The Dimensions Of Blended Learning By Developing A Case Study Template For Blended Activities, Damian Gordon, Paul Doyle, Anna Becevel, Tina Baloh

Articles

The BLITT (Blended Learning International Train the Trainer) Project is focused on developing a training programme to equip teachers to become proficient in championing the use of Blended Learning in the classroom. The training programme will be developed in two phases, in the first phase involves the development of a series of case studies relevant to Blended Learning, followed by a second phase where the BLITT training programme will be designed and developed, using input from these cases. In developing the blended learning case studies, two key documents were identified as being essential, first, a case study tracking template to …

Synergies In Scholarship At The Research Teaching Nexus At Tu Dublin: Building Research Synergies Into Teaching Activity Workshop, Deirdre Mcquillan

Articles

Objective of workshop is to provide and recognise possibilities for research synergies for individuals attending and to help participants develop more research supportive personal teaching philosophies. The workshop is evidence based and drawn from a survey of academics at TU Dublin in early 2021 on research synergies at the research teaching nexus.

Examining New Vistas In Leadership Learning With Technology, Lorayne Robertson, Jill Harvey, Janani Srikantha, Damali Thomas, Kavita Anand Jan 2016

Examining New Vistas In Leadership Learning With Technology, Lorayne Robertson, Jill Harvey, Janani Srikantha, Damali Thomas, Kavita Anand

Internationalization, Globalization and Exchange in Higher Education

Technology-enabled learning can open new vistas in higher education. Moving a course online, however, does not guarantee that students will be more engaged, nor that they will think more critically, or understand more deeply. Online learning does create new digital learning spaces where students can make connections without the constraints of physical co-location. This case study outlines the experiences of a small group of students in the same graduate course who chose an opportunity to work in an authentic, cross-continental context within a global, professional learning community. The students were able to “see” leadership theory in practice through the investigation …

The Evolution Of A New Technological University In Terms Of Policy Definition And Control Of Implementation, Kevin Kelly, Deborah Brennan Jan 2015

The Evolution Of A New Technological University In Terms Of Policy Definition And Control Of Implementation, Kevin Kelly, Deborah Brennan

Stream 1: Enterprise and Engagement

This paper derives from a Doctoral case study completed in the Technological University Dublin (DIT) in 2008. The main issues of the case study are still being addressed today as DIT prepares to amalgamate with the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown (ITB) and Institute of Technology Tallaght (ITT) in 2015. The combined new institute will become a university in 2016 and is in the process of a move to a green field site. The rate and scope of these changes are challenging for all concerned. Through a series of interviews and focus groups in 2008, a story of DIT emerged. The …

Creating Serious Games At Third Level: Evaluating The Implications Of An In-House Approach, Pauline Rooney Oct 2012

Creating Serious Games At Third Level: Evaluating The Implications Of An In-House Approach, Pauline Rooney

Conference papers

Due to the inherently interdisciplinary nature of serious games their development
necessitates the effective collaboration of team members spanning multiple disciplines and skill sets (Adams 2010). In their attempts to harness these skills, most higher education projects have formed teams through academic/commercial partnerships, whereby academics and commercial developers combine their respective expertises in subject matter/pedagogy and game design/development. However considering the expertise in most higher education institutions and the recent surge in serious games courses at third level, one might reasonably conclude that higher education holds huge potential for developing serious games in-house. Yet surprisingly, such ventures are relatively few. …

The Future Direction Of Institutes Of Higher Education In Ireland And Their Pathway Of Transformation: A Case Study Of The Dublin Institute Of Technology's "Operation Transformation" As A Leading Example Of An Institute Of The Future, Ann Conway Mar 2011

The Future Direction Of Institutes Of Higher Education In Ireland And Their Pathway Of Transformation: A Case Study Of The Dublin Institute Of Technology's "Operation Transformation" As A Leading Example Of An Institute Of The Future, Ann Conway

Conference papers

This paper is an outline proposal for an EdD thesis with the University of Sheffield which has been accepted. The principle aim of this research is to investigate what might an institute of education be in the future through viewing the current changes afoot in the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) and the underlying reasons for these changes to take place. It is not proposed that DIT is the ideal example but it is one example of Irish higher education (HE) in transition to be more students focused and flexible for future demands. The HE system in Ireland is broad …

Notions Of A Learning Society And Learning Partnership Vehicles: The Island's Project, A Case Study, Fergus Murphy Jan 2010

Notions Of A Learning Society And Learning Partnership Vehicles: The Island's Project, A Case Study, Fergus Murphy

Masters

This case study focuses on the Partnership Vehicle that was jointly developed by the School of Art, Design and Printing at the DIT, and the Sherkin Island Development Society in the period 1998 to 2004, in order to construct and deliver a pilot Fine Art programme on Sherkin Island in West Cork. The pilot programme was delivered on Sherkin from 2000 to 2003, and subsequently, based on the pilot, the School of Art, Design and Printing developed a prototype Fine Art degree aimed at isolated communities. This course is currently being delivered on Sherkin. A third level-community partnership seems an …

The Unevoc National Centre Ireland (Unci) A Case Study: Description, Reflections And Opportunities, Aidan Kenny

Conference Papers

In this paper I adopt and merge elements from both Yin (2005) ‘Case Study Method’, and Guba and Lincoln (1989) ‘Fourth Generation Evaluation’ to provide the reader with some background information, insights and future directions of the recently established UNEVOC National Centre Ireland. This is presented in three separate sections; Section 1, Descriptions, provides details on the background of the Technological University Dublin, locates the emergence of the UNESCO-UNEVOC agenda in DIT, and DIT’s appointment as the UNEVOC National Centre Ireland. Section 2, Reflections, details the work of the National UNEVOC Centre Ireland during the period 2006-2008. I note some …

Why Are Students Leaving And What Can We Do To Stop Them?, Ann Conway Jan 2005

Why Are Students Leaving And What Can We Do To Stop Them?, Ann Conway

Other resources

Not only are demographic changes taking place within the Irish population but in addition, significant challenges are being imposed on higher education providers to retain as many students as possible within the higher education system. Yorke (1999) noted that many students leave higher education prematurely and about 50% of these students do so during, or at the end of their first year in college (DIT, 2003). Some non-completion of courses is unavoidable and should not be viewed as failure by the student, tutor or college, but acknowledged that dropping out is likely (Oliver, 2001). However, a lot of non-completion is …
