This personal experience essay features five women professors who, as engaged scholars, seek to continuously respond to the needs of their local community by volunteering their time and expertise to offer educational programs that focus on creative arts and academic assistance for K–12 students. This piece explores the opportunities and obstacles we experienced in using virtual platforms, during the 2020 global pandemic, in order to re-envision our civic responsibilities to engage communities beyond our previous place-based programs.

Access, Achievement, And Academic Resilience: The Relationship Between Avid And Black Student Participation In Advanced Placement Courses, Jemimah Lea Young

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the AVID program and Black student Advanced Placement (AP) participation. Academic resilience was operationally defined in this study as the ability of a student to successfully complete advanced placement or international baccalaureate courses despite academic risk factors. This study hypothesized that a relationship exists between the participation of Black students in the AVID program and AP course completion. The participants were 9th grade Black students (N = 2,267) that participated in the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009/2012 (HSLS:09/12). Dewey and Freire were the initial champions of community engagement in the classroom. This has been refined and adopted by researchers in the development of project-based learning. This specific project includes a component of community service that contributes to the engagement of students in the project. This article chronicles the planning and development of a project as well as the impact that students had on the community. This specific type of project was designed using the SAGE acronym - Student Choice, Authenticity, Global Significance, and Exhibition.
