The Relationship Between Chronic Pain And Stress, Anxiety, And Depression In College Students
The Relationship Between Chronic Pain And Stress, Anxiety, And Depression In College Students
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this study was to measure chronic pain levels as they relate to stress, anxiety, and depression in college students. This is a non-experimental, correlational research design, using a survey methodology. Eighty-four participants, over the age of 18, were recruited (men = 33.3%, women = 66.6%) to participate in this study. The participants were asked to complete a questionnaire which was a compilation of the Chronic Pain Grade Questionnaire (CPGQ) (Von Korff et al., 1992), the Perceived Stress Scale (Wickrama et al., 2013), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) (Beck et al., 1988), the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) (Beck …

Influence Of Racism On Minority Students' Mental Health And Academic Performance
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
This literature review summarizes, analyzes, and evaluates a selection of 15 recent research articles regarding the influence racism has on minority students’ mental health and academic performance. All the literature used here was published between the years 2010 and 2021. Of the studies contained in this work, the majority addressed the topic of racism and how it influences student mental health, with an emphasis on minority stress and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or trauma symptoms. Another portion looked at how racism influences academic performance. The literature shows that higher exposure to racism produces negative mental health, which can manifest …
Impact Of Religion And Politics On Pro-Environmental Behavior And Views About Climate Change
Impact Of Religion And Politics On Pro-Environmental Behavior And Views About Climate Change
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this study was to analyze how religion and politics impact peoples’ opinions about climate change and likeliness to engage in pro-environmental behavior. The study conducted was a non-experimental, correlational research design, using a survey methodology. Fifty-eight participants, all over the age of 18, were recruited to participate in this study. The participants were asked to complete five questionnaires: The Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS) (Huber & Huber, 2012), The Climate Change Attitude Survey (CCAS) (Christensen & Knezek, 2015), The Political Participation Scale (PPS), The Environmental Behavior Scale (EBS), and a demographic questionnaire. Two research hypotheses guided this …
Development Of A Method For Evaluating Absorption Spectra Irregularities: 3-Methylcyclopentanol And 4-Methylcyclohexanol
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
Accurate rate constant values are critical for understanding chemical reaction pathways involving cyclopentenyl and cyclohexenyl cation intermediates. One approach for determining this essential kinetic information follows the time rate of change of such cations using UV-visible spectrophotometry. However, the obtained absorption spectra often show asymmetric irregularities such as shoulders due to interfering side reactions. The aim of this exploratory study was to develop a method of interpreting UV-visible spectra that provides accurate rate constant values in addition to clarifying the cause of signal abnormalities. In this investigation, changes in spectra of the cation intermediates were followed over the course of …
The Impact Of Political Beliefs On Ethical Framework In Adults
The Impact Of Political Beliefs On Ethical Framework In Adults
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
This study aimed to examine the differences between major political philosophies in the United States and whether these beliefs influence a person’s ethical views. This research was a non-experimental correlation design, using a survey methodology with adult participants. The participants were asked to complete the 39-item The Impact of Political Beliefs on Ethical Frameworks in Adults Survey. A Pearson’s r was conducted to determine the relationship between political beliefs and ethical frameworks. The results showed a slightly positive correlation that was statistically significant [r(166) = .28, p = .000]. Therefore, there was sufficient evidence to support the research hypothesis: there …
Slavery, Motherhood, And Recurring Trauma In Toni Morrison’S Beloved, Erik Lorenz
Slavery, Motherhood, And Recurring Trauma In Toni Morrison’S Beloved, Erik Lorenz
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
This paper explores how Toni Morrison, in her novel Beloved, treats the myriad ways in which slavery as a class system inflicted trauma on Black mothers and daughters, and how this trauma repeated itself to ripple outside slavery into freedom. Using historical research, E. P. Thompson’s definition of class, and Cathy Caruth’s work in trauma theory, an analysis of Morrison’s mother characters reveals a pattern: the pressures of the slavery class system warped mother-daughter relationships, inflicting trauma, and the trauma seemed fated to repeat itself over generations. Whether Morrison’s mothers were traumatized by labor demands competing with childcare for the …
Personality Traits, Religiosity, And Academic Major, Ryan Schmid
Personality Traits, Religiosity, And Academic Major, Ryan Schmid
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
Personality traits are intimately involved with many, if not all, human endeavors, including the pursuit of a college degree. The purpose of this study was to see if there were differences in personality traits amongst academic majors and religiosity levels at Southern Adventist University. It also examined if there were differences in religiosity across academic majors. The differences in academic major and religiosity were compared between both gender and ethnicity. Fifty students from seven academic major categories were given personality and religiosity measures during a class, a LifeGroup, and several arranged meeting times. The results of these measures yielded several …
The Civil War And The Transformation Of American Medicine, Benya Wilson
The Civil War And The Transformation Of American Medicine, Benya Wilson
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
The most common historiographical narrative used to explain the transformation of American medicine during the Civil War centralizes on the brilliance of a few notable physicians, whose radical ideas, daring, and exceptional work ethic built or set precedents for standards foundational to modern medicine. However, this approach is limited and does not consider the impact of the context of war and power structures in shaping the practice of medicine. Through examining personal accounts and official documentation including, government reports, news articles, war journals, private and military correspondence, physicians and nurse’s notes, and post-war autobiographical recollections, a new understanding emerges. Civil …
Does Bambi Need Privacy? The Impact Of Human Recreational Trail Traffic On Abundance And Daily Activity Of The White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus), Diana Alvarez
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
Humans have a significant impact on wildlife populations. Although not as obvious, even non-consumptive recreational activities (i.e. hiking and mountain biking) can impact wildlife. Previous research has suggested that human traffic can impact the movement patterns of the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Specifically, as human traffic increases, deer sightings decrease. Also, due to their crepuscular nature, deer peak activity is at dawn and dusk, yet one study reported a decrease in deer sightings in the evening that seemed to correspond to a peak in human traffic. However, the cause-and-effect relationship between human traffic and deer daily movements has …
The Ironclad Economy, Ryan Thomas
The Ironclad Economy, Ryan Thomas
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
This paper investigates and describes the Confederate navy’s attempt to establish a naval presence in New Orleans. At the forefront of the Civil War, the Confederate States were pressed to create and sustain a working military presence within an evolving economy. The Southern economy was about to be ravished by the Union’s blockade. Both the Union and the Confederacy knew that establishing an early presence on the water would be of the greatest importance, of which the Union had a considerably large head start on the nonexistent Confederate navy. This paper covers the birth of the Confederate navy in an …
Emotional Intelligence: Improving The Delivery Of Quality Patient Care, Genesis Serrano, Angela Putt
Emotional Intelligence: Improving The Delivery Of Quality Patient Care, Genesis Serrano, Angela Putt
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize one’s own emotions and that of others when responding to a situation. It has a long-standing reputation for predicting positive outcomes in many fields and occupations. Emotional intelligence has also had a long-standing reputation for taking the backseat in education. Nursing is no exception. With many nurses having little to no knowledge of anticipating patient needs or what it means to be empathetic, it can impact the patient’s perception of patient care. Often, the skill of being emotionally intelligent is either learned on the job through experience, innately in the character of …
Seventh-Day Adventism And The Achievement Of Transcendent Identity, Yasmin Phillip
Seventh-Day Adventism And The Achievement Of Transcendent Identity, Yasmin Phillip
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
The Seventh-day Adventist Church is one of the most racially and culturally diverse religious groups in the United States. With the church’s Biblical mandate to proclaim the Three Angels’ messages to all peoples, the need for a unity that acknowledges yet transcends individual and collective differences is imperative. However, racial and cultural tensions, particularly between Caucasians and African Americans, continue to hinder this aim. While theological discussions regarding such issues are common within the church, sociological nuances are not always clearly pointed out. This paper investigated sociological theories behind and challenges to multicultural religious settings, the obstacles Adventist history has …
Power Reclaimed And Given: Female Passivity And Agency In Harris, Brand, And Smith, Annika Northrop
Power Reclaimed And Given: Female Passivity And Agency In Harris, Brand, And Smith, Annika Northrop
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
The paper “Power Reclaimed and Given: Female Passivity and Agency in Harris, Brand, and Smith” explores representations of women in art in Claire Harris’ “After Image,” Dionne Brand’s “Blues Spiritual for Mammy Prater,” and Ali Smith’s How to be both. Harris’ poem depicts a woman, who is the subject of a male photographer’s photos and who has been objectified and relegated to passivity by the photographer, in the active process of reclaiming the power to create her own identity. Brand’s poem shows Mammy Prater as a woman who, although formerly subjugated and abused, has already reclaimed that power; in …
Risky Behavior And Religiosity In Students, Chaden Noriega
Risky Behavior And Religiosity In Students, Chaden Noriega
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
This study examined the relationship between religiosity and risky behavior in college students. A convenience sample of 31 students of at least 18 years of age from Southern Adventist University participated in this study. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire created by the researcher regarding gender, race, religious identification, and class standing in addition to the Risky Behavior Questionnaire (RBQ) (Weiss et al., 2018) and items from both the Duke Religion Index (DRI) (Koenig et al., 1997) and The Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CRS) (Huber & Huber, 2012). Results of the sample showed that when an individual’s level of religiosity increases, …
A Complete Chronology Of The Israelites In Egypt: A Textual Study Of The Length Of The Sojourn From A Seventh-Day Adventist Perspective, Matthew Bronson
A Complete Chronology Of The Israelites In Egypt: A Textual Study Of The Length Of The Sojourn From A Seventh-Day Adventist Perspective, Matthew Bronson
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
Regarding the chronology of the Israelite Exodus from Egypt, two major theories are readily apparent: either the Israelites sojourned in the land of Egypt for a total of 430 years, or else for 215 years in Egypt after sojourning in the land of Canaan for 215 years. This question is examined from a Seventh-day Adventist perspective, with precedence given to Scriptural passages. An overall chronological framework is constructed for context, dealing with selected issues in the study of biblical chronology. The primary arguments for each theory are individually assessed, as are objections to many of the arguments. A small treatise …
Poverty Simulation, Jennifer Gray
Poverty Simulation, Jennifer Gray
Journal of Interdisciplinary Graduate Research
The School of Social Work at Southern Adventist University has been working alongside the Chattanooga Police Department studying the interactions between police and the communities they serve. This research has led to the question of how law enforcement officers (in Chattanooga) are treating impoverished people of color. Literature suggests that there are not any evidence based interventions to improve the way professionals treat individuals in such circumstances, especially in the law enforcement industry. In a few instances, poverty simulations have been shown to build more empathy and understanding for individuals. The School of Social Work has conducted three simulations that …
Can Open-Mindedness Be Primed? An Investigation Into Creativity, Openness To Experience, And Open-Mindedness Among College Students With Implications For Counselors, Alex Gallimore
Journal of Interdisciplinary Graduate Research
With an ever-diversifying population, open-mindedness regarding an individual’s values and beliefs is important, especially for counselors. This study hypothesized that creativity could be a means to increase one’s open-mindedness. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, this study examined the impact of a creative task on participants’ open-mindedness. Additionally, a correlation was sought between open-mindedness and the Big Five personality trait of Openness to Experience as well as a comparison between participants studying for careers in the helping professions (counselors, psychologists, and social workers) and all other participants. Two hundred and forty-four students at a small, private university participated. Results found no significant …

Journal of Interdisciplinary Graduate Research
This study explores the attitudes of police officers toward personal utilization of mental health services. It is a mixed-methods, descriptive study which incorporated qualitative interviews and quantitative data collected from local police officers. The Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help-SF scale (ATSPPH-SF) was used to measure officer attitudes toward utilizing mental health services. Qualitative interview questions were used to further investigate their attitudes regarding mental health. The scores from the ATSPPH-SF scale reflected that the police officers in this study were moderately accepting of counseling services. Participants stated that officers would primarily be deterred from counseling due to prideful personalities …
A Good Life: Palliative Care In The World Of Dementia, Nicola Farmer
A Good Life: Palliative Care In The World Of Dementia, Nicola Farmer
Journal of Interdisciplinary Graduate Research
Objective: The World Health Organization (2019) reports that dementia is the seventh leading cause of death with an estimated 50 million people worldwide with this disease. In the United States out of one and a half million Medicare patients on hospice in 2016, only 18% had dementia (The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, 2017). McAteer and Wellbery (2013) identified that while referrals to services seem to be on the rise, many are not made until the patient is close to death in the last weeks of an illness. The purpose of this project was to review the literature to …
Ui-Speed: Uniquely Identifiable Self-Contained Pass-Through Enhanced Encryption Device, Alexander Ennis
Ui-Speed: Uniquely Identifiable Self-Contained Pass-Through Enhanced Encryption Device, Alexander Ennis
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
USB encryption is an effective method for securing data. Current available solutions are limited to host-side, drive-side, and neither-side encryption. Host-side encryption must be downloaded on every host, and drive-side encryption is expensive. Current neither-side implementations either provide weak protection or provide it at the cost of unneeded multi-step processes. For USB encryption to be portable, inexpensive, and secure, it must have a straightforward locking mechanism, be able to encrypt any drive, and be distinguishable from the encryption of every other drive. The solution proposed here adds an identifiable aspect to each drive that is encrypted, isolates the encryption from …

Colonialism, Apartheid, And Democracy: South Africa's Historical Implications On The Land Reform Debate, Adeline Piotrowski Ms.
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
This research examines South African history, beginning with it as a colonial entity up until its inception as a democratic state, and how it works in conjunction with the land reform debate. This paper addresses arguments of South Africa's colonial history, analyzes policy making during the apartheid era, and traces the steps taken towards becoming a democracy. Furthermore, it places special attention to how actions mandated by the apartheid government, and legislation from this time period, are currently affecting the debate at hand. It then addresses the current debates on land reform and some social implications that come along with …
Ireland: A Study In The Effectiveness Of Corporate Tax Rate Reduction, Caleb Howard
Ireland: A Study In The Effectiveness Of Corporate Tax Rate Reduction, Caleb Howard
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
The Republic of Ireland, which until recently had one of the worst standards of living in Europe, experienced a period of tremendous growth throughout the 1990s and early 2000s that revolutionized their economy and society, transforming their country into the “Celtic Tiger”. Much of this growth was due to foreign multi-national corporations (MNCs) investing in the Irish economy. This study examines the potential reasons behind the increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and determines that it was primarily due to Ireland’s reduction in corporate tax rates between 1987 and 2003. However, other determinants of national advantage such as education …

Students’ GPAs did not appear to be impacted by the total number nor types of activities in which …
Analysis Of Burnout And Career Calling In Undergraduate Pre-Medical Students, Annalise Lang
Analysis Of Burnout And Career Calling In Undergraduate Pre-Medical Students, Annalise Lang
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
Burnout is a state of exhaustion, impaired performance, and decreased motivation and is associated with several factors including a significant workload, disruptions to the balance between work and other aspects of life, and difficulty expressing or sharing emotions (alexithymia). Because of the demanding nature of the clinical environment, medical doctors are at significant risk of burnout. Because of this, studies examining the factors that contribute to burnout have been conducted on physicians, medical residents, and medical students. However, less work has been done to explore burnout in pre-medical undergraduate (pre-med) students. One factor that may mitigate burnout is having a …
A True-Blue American Paradox: The Constitutional Tension Between Religious Liberty And Sunday Legislation In The United States, Marcus Alden Swearingen Bates
A True-Blue American Paradox: The Constitutional Tension Between Religious Liberty And Sunday Legislation In The United States, Marcus Alden Swearingen Bates
Journal of Interdisciplinary Graduate Research
A fundamental legal tension exists between religious liberty and Sunday legislation in the United States. This tension is based upon the fact that the United States Supreme Court has ruled consistently that Sunday rest has developed into a secular principle, and no longer possesses the religious significance that it once had. As such, the Court has claimed that the individual states are within their constitutional authority to regulate the use of Sunday as a common day of rest for the welfare of their citizens. To contest this claim, this paper will present evidence to suggest that Sunday rest is still …
The Impact Of Race And Identity On College Student’S Mental Health And Academic Self-Concept: Understanding The Interrelationship Between Ethnic Identity And Perceived Racial Discrimination, Thiffany Rambana
Journal of Interdisciplinary Graduate Research
Despite the detailed history of racism in the United States and the centuries that have passed since slavery and the genocide of native communities, many ethnic populations continue to suffer the impact of racism. As racism persists in the modern era of American life, one must wonder how emerging adults are dealing with racism; especially college students. Therefore, it is important to describe the role played by racial discrimination, especially in the way individuals interact with those who are similar or different from them. The purpose of this study was to compare the perceptions of racial discrimination among all ethnic …
The Little Scroll Of Revelation 10: Prophecy Or Excuse?, Nelson Mercado
The Little Scroll Of Revelation 10: Prophecy Or Excuse?, Nelson Mercado
Journal of Interdisciplinary Graduate Research
Most Seventh-day Adventist Christians are familiar with the “Great Disappointment” and its meaning. Some Adventists see it as part of their history, one they can be proud about. Other Adventists are not well versed with their history. Still others may feel embarrassed because the origin of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is based on a mistake made by William Miller. There are many Evangelical Christians who criticize Seventh-day Adventists because of their apparent dubious origin or believe that the “Great Disappointment” and its connection to the “Investigative Judgment” was simply an excuse to save face because Jesus did not return on …
Sex Trafficking: A Toolbox For Apn's, Nissa Berbawy
Sex Trafficking: A Toolbox For Apn's, Nissa Berbawy
Journal of Interdisciplinary Graduate Research
As the fastest growing crime in the world (Walker-Rodriguez, & Hill, 2011) and with sex slaves found in all 50 states (Grace et al, 2014), finding a solution to the problem of sex slavery is critical. One study showed 63.3% of sex slave survivors were treated in the emergency department while enslaved, revealing an opportunity for healthcare providers to intervene (The Emergency Nurses Association, 2015). This review of literature focused on the human trafficking subcategory of sexual exploitation (sex slaves). The purpose of this review of literature is to provide evidence based resources to better equip APN’s to identify, intervene, …
