Leading a senior delegation from 18-23 November 2017, SMU President Prof Arnoud De Meyer visited six partner universities in Shanghai and Beijing. The trip culminated in productive meetings with the leaders of these reputable Chinese universities and the signing of a number of partnership agreements that would strengthen the links of SMU and its schools with their Chinese counterparts. The universities are: Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University, China University of Political Science and Law.

However, it is challenging to introduce cases to address high-order cognitive skills such as analyzing and creating new IT solutions in technically-oriented computing course. In this research, we present our experience in introducing three types of case studies -- Story-Telling case, Design-and-Problem-Solving case, and Create-Design-Implement case to a course in an undergraduate Information Systems programme. At the end of each course, students are required to give feedback on the course and instructor. This feedback includes quantitative rating using Likert scale and qualitative feedback as comments. Such qualitative feedback can provide valuable insights in helping the instructor enhance the course content and teaching delivery. However, the main challenge in analysing the qualitative feedback is the perceived increase in time and effort needed to manually process the textual comments. SOL is an open-source library for scalable online learning with high-dimensional data. The library provides a family of regular and sparse online learning algorithms for large-scale classification tasks with high efficiency, scalability, portability, and extensibility. We provide easy-to-use command-line tools, python wrappers and library calls for users and developers, and comprehensive documents for both beginners and advanced users. SOL is not only a machine learning toolbox, but also a comprehensive experimental platform for online learning research. Experiments demonstrate that SOL is highly efficient and scalable for large-scale learning with high-dimensional data.

In this paper we report our study on the impact of implementing a flipped classroom model on student learning in an undergraduate introductory programming course. We use three components to measure student learning namely, final exam scores, competency acquisition and feedback levels. We compare a traditional offering with a flipped offering delivered the following year to a comparable student population, and with no change in the course content and assessments. We observed that in comparison to the traditional, the flipped model increased pass rates in the final exam and also enhanced competency acquisition. In terms of feedback levels, the flipped …

Educators consider the video learning approach an effective method to deliver educational content as compared to the traditional method of books and written materials. This paper presents a project that involves student-generated videos to learn internal control in an undergraduate accounting information systems course. We believe that this video learning approach is an engaging way for students to be self-directed learners in learning internal control and complements the written materials in the textbook.
