Measuring High School Counselor Beliefs On The Importance Of Mtmdss Universal Supports Since Covid-19, Ryan J. Carter
Dissertations
The U.S. onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought immediate and unprecedented disruption to California secondary education. High school students in California have endured varying degrees of uncertainty, hardship, and trauma, with the full extent of impacts on students not yet known. California high school counselors, faced with the dilemma of how to support student needs effectively and equitably during COVID-19, have looked to the state as well as professional organizations for guidance on best support practices. Multi-tiered support frameworks, such as MTSS and MTMDSS have emerged as prominent pandemic response recommendations and are being implemented throughout California. The …

Impact Of Family Assistance On Latinx College Students' School Engagement, Alma N. Acosta Sanchez
Master's Theses
Across California State Universities, Latinx young adults represent a portion of all undergraduate students, but not all these students graduate. The study investigated the impact of Latinx college students’ familismo values and weekly family assistance behaviors for promoting and challenging school engagement and well-being. The sample included N = 167 (89.2% females) Latinx college students and their average age was 22.76 years (SD = 5.39, range of 18.00–50.00). Participants responded to an online survey, which included questions assessing parental education and gender, strength of beliefs in familismo values, whether they had assisted the family in any of nine behaviors in …
“What I Have Learned About Ethnic Studies Is To Love Myself More”: A Look At Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy And Newcomer Students, Lan Nguyen
Master's Projects
Throughout American history, schooling has been used as a tool of settler colonialism, hegemony, and white supremacy. This process of utilizing schooling as a tool of domination has been labeled by theorists as “miseducation”. To attempt to combat the miseducation that students experience in their schooling, I implemented culturally sustaining pedagogy, which necessitates the maintenance and strengthening of students’ relationships with their cultures in schools. In my project, I focused on newcomer students, as immigrant students are often the most underserved population in schools, and also are the most vulnerable to assimilationist teachings. This project utilized classroom observations, student work, …

In the United States, incarceration rates have increased dramatically over the last three decades, soaring above any other country. Significant factors contributing to the increase include changes in sentencing laws and policies that target drug-related offenders and prioritize punishment over rehabilitation. Strict sentencing laws have led to mass incarceration, which has caused severe prison overcrowding and led to the infringement of fundamental human rights in prisons (Gottesdiener, 2011).
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, approximately 600,000 individuals are released from federal and state prisons each year (Carson, 2018). In California, an estimated one in three adults has an arrest …

Student Health Services On Community College Campuses In California, Travis Cheng
Master's Projects
A community college's main mission is to provide access to education and providing access to basic healthcare bolsters success and lessens the educational disparity gap. Furthermore, community colleges provide greater opportunities for social and physical well being by offering student health care as one of its services. Besides contributing to the limited body of literature on the topic of student health centers on community college campuses in California, the purpose of this research is to gain a better understanding of how the student health centers on community college campuses have evolved in California regarding the services provided, and to explore …
Graduation Rates At San Jose State University Of Transferring Community College Students With An Associate Degree For Transfer: A Process Evaluation, Alex Cordova
Master's Projects
One area of focus by the state of California to answer the educational needs is community college transfer students. Transfer students are students who begin their college career in a California community college, then transfer to a four-year degree granting institution. The state of California views this group of students as a key part of creating more college-educated Californians for the economy of the future (California Legislative Information, 2010). There are two main issues when evaluating community college transfer students. The first is the complexity of the transfer process. Second is the unreliable data that is being used to determine …

A Process Evaluation Of The Campbell Union High School District Bond Measure Aa, Gabriel Altamirano
Master's Projects
The Board of Trustees at the Campbell Union High School District (CUHSD) completed a district wide facility assessment and created updated facilities master plans (CUHSD, 2015). Consultants were contracted to coordinate focus groups consisting of district students and staff to develop a list of facility needs across the district (CUHSD, 2015). The facilities at all five high schools were in need of major capital projects, from replacement of aging mechanical systems to new classroom spaces for student growth (CUHSD, 2015).
The school district decided to request a general obligation bond measure for the community to approve for the facility improvements …

Student Withdrawals In A Job Training Program, Amy Lawrence
Master's Projects
Within the context of a competitive market, shifting funding sources, and a new regulatory environment, the purpose of this paper is not to examine educational attainment, but rather to research student drop out, or withdrawal, at the post-secondary job training institution of Center for Employment Training (CET). The foremost research questions to be answered are what are the characteristics of students who withdraw from job training programs provided by Center for Employment Training, and what factors may influence withdrawal.

San Jose State University would benefit from the implementation of the Campus Community Emergency Response Team (C-CERT), a program that many higher education institutions use to train community members in disaster preparedness. With a C-CERT program, trained people are empowered to know how to conduct themselves during an emergency, and learn how to keep themselves, their friends and colleagues safe. This research surveyed and interviewed emergency management professionals in other higher education institutions to determine best practices for C-CERT implementation. The goal of this research was to analyze other higher education institutions’ C-CERT success, identify what characteristics make their C-CERT …
Leveraging The Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (Wioa) To Help Finance College & University Career Centers, Daniel Newell
Leveraging The Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act (Wioa) To Help Finance College & University Career Centers, Daniel Newell
Master's Projects
This research explores whether career services for the adult and dislocated worker populations of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) can be leveraged to provide career services in a college or university setting to serve students and the public while meeting WIOA’s enrollment goals. For colleges and universities without career centers, leveraging WIOA funding may be a solution to increasing career center resources and expanding existing career services, while augmenting program support through federal funding.
