Enhancing Student Learning With Brain-Based Research, Ted Bonnema Nov 2009

Enhancing Student Learning With Brain-Based Research, Ted Bonnema

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This paper discusses brain-based learning and its relation to classroom instruction. A growing quantity of research currently exists regarding how the brain perceives, processes, and ultimately learns new information. In order to maximize their teaching efficacy, educators should have a basic understanding of key memory functions in the brain, and how these functions relate to student learning. In this paper, the author surveys current literature to identify foundational instructional strategies that are supported by brain-based research. A Microsoft PowerPoint© presentation is included that is intended for use at an in-service training with the goal of providing participants with (1) an …

Classroom Management Techniques For Adhd Students: A Teaching Guide For Secondary Teachers, Troy A. Stevens Apr 2009

Classroom Management Techniques For Adhd Students: A Teaching Guide For Secondary Teachers, Troy A. Stevens

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

"Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) occurs in 3% to 5% in school age children" (Sherman, Rasmussen, & Baydala, 2006, p. 1). This figure continues to grow due to diagnoses of ADHD, which were not identified earlier in young children. This increase in the number of students with ADHD effects educators and how they manage their classroom. The success of an educator is based on how well his or her students learn and how that educator manages the classroom environment. Typically, ADHD students disrupt the learning environment consistently, which effects the overall learning environment. Educators are provided with instructional and behavioral …

The Effects Of Participation In Extracurricular Activities On Academic Performance In Secondary School Students, Elizabeth G. Rees Sep 2008

The Effects Of Participation In Extracurricular Activities On Academic Performance In Secondary School Students, Elizabeth G. Rees

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Various studies show that participation in extracurricular activities lead to success both academically and professionally. However, the general public has limited access to this research, and therefore many students are not benefiting from these programs. In this paper, the author reviews the published research of how participation in extracurricular activities affects academic success. She then uses this research to develop a promotional campaign that school administrators may use to educate parents, students, and teachers of the benefits of extracurricular activity participation. The projects are oriented toward presentations at school events and online access to school administrators and parents.

Factors That Lead American Foreign Language Students To Discontinue The Study Of The Target Language Past The Minimum Requirement, Gabriele Seffert

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Factors that lead American foreign language students to discontinue the study of the target language past the minimum requirement. This research project expanded on a study by Shedivy (2004) who investigated motivational factors for continuation of foreign language acquisition after the two-year minimum requirement during high school. Seffert's (2007) study sought reasons why students did not continue beyond the two-year minimum. The phenomenological inquiry was supported by literature on historic-political factors, motivational considerations, and educational strategies influencing students' interest in second language acquisition. Subjects of this study were between the age of 18 and 40 and had discontinued foreign language …

Implementation Of A Reading Curriculum In A 6 Week Summer Enrichment Program, Katie J. Holz-Russell

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

In this research project, the author presents an enrichment curriculum that will be implemented in the Denver Summerbridge 6 week summer school program. Denver public school students choose to attend this program because they are seeking academic enrichment during the summer. They seek enrichment from Denver Summerbridge because most supplementary programs at their home schools focus on closing the achievement gap and increasing standardized test scores, rather than offering a structured enrichment program for gifted students. The curriculum presented in Chapter 4 provides a framework for a 9th grade literacy classroom. The author attempted to strike a balance between reviewing …

Examining The Effectiveness Of Computer Animations As A Tool In Teaching High School Introductory Chemistry, Carl G. Bailey Jan 2007

Examining The Effectiveness Of Computer Animations As A Tool In Teaching High School Introductory Chemistry, Carl G. Bailey

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Computer animations may provide educators with a viable way to address chemistry's abstract nature. Current research suggests that students benefit from even short exposure to computer animations of molecular events. This applied study examined the potential benefit of using computer animations to enhance traditional teaching techniques. Two groups of students, one taught with computer animations and one taught without computer animations, completed the same assessments. Statistical analysis of the assessments provides evidence that the use of computer animations leads to improved student comprehension of microscopic processes and their relationship to macroscopic phenomena occurring in gases.

Retaining Nevada's High Risk Youth In High School, Pat Spadaro

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The primary goal of dropout prevention programs is to prevent as many students from leaving school as possible. The percentage of individuals leaving Nevada schools without obtaining a regular diploma is among the highest in the nation (Schmidt & Barr, 2004, p. 9). The primary methodology employed in this project was Content Analysis (Leedy & Ormrod, 2005). In Content Analysis, the researcher identifies specific examples of selected characteristics in similar documents defining the characteristics more clearly. Each item is then broken down into smaller manageable segments to be analyzed separately (Leedy & Ormrod, 2005, p. 142). This research reviewed documents …

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator And Learning In Secondary Classrooms, Holly Frank Jan 2006

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator And Learning In Secondary Classrooms, Holly Frank

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Students and educators have different learning styles based on personality type. Because many of the 16 types identified in the Myers Briggs Type Indicator may be present in any given classroom, it is important for educators be aware of their own personality type and related learning and teaching styles, and also be able to recognize their students' behaviors and learning preferences based on their knowledge of the MBTI and its dichotomous pairs of preferences. In this project, this researcher attempted to create a way to equip educators with information about the implications of individual personality types and learning styles in …
