Professional Development-Key To Retention Of Rural Principals?, Dawn Martin, Jason M. Clemensen
Professional Development-Key To Retention Of Rural Principals?, Dawn Martin, Jason M. Clemensen
Faculty Submissions
Building principals wear many hats, not the least of which is instructional leader. Leading curriculum, instruction and school improvement efforts can be overwhelming to leaders who must also tend to the management and operational demands of the job. Rural leaders are often expected to assume even greater responsibilities with considerably less support. Although expected to design and provide professional development for others, insufficient time and funding often prevent the leader from engaging in his/her own learning and growth.
This article describes the efforts of one university to provide relevant, low-or-no-cost
professional development opportunities as a service to building leaders and …

Immunization Communication In ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’: Inoculation Theory, Health Messaging, And Children’S Entertainment Television, Josh Compton, Alicia Mason
Immunization Communication In ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’: Inoculation Theory, Health Messaging, And Children’S Entertainment Television, Josh Compton, Alicia Mason
Faculty Submissions
Entertainment education research has shown that television programs can communicate important health information to television viewers. Much of this research focuses on mass media effects (e.g., behavioral intention of viewers, post-viewing; attitudinal change, post-viewing). Less is known about the rhetorical strategies employed in such messaging. We review para-social and para-proxemics literature to describe the viewing context and then offer a detailed rhetorical analysis of immunization messaging on the children’s television program, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” arguing that, aptly, Fred Rogers’ rhetorical framing mirrored that of the inoculation theory of resistance to influence, presenting “weak” challenges to his young viewers to help …
Does Nonbinding Commitment Promote Children’S Cooperation In A Social Dilemma?, Laurent Prétôt, Katherine Mcauliffe
Does Nonbinding Commitment Promote Children’S Cooperation In A Social Dilemma?, Laurent Prétôt, Katherine Mcauliffe
Faculty Submissions
Communication is a powerful tool for promoting cooperation in adults and is considered one of the most important solutions to social dilemmas. One feature that makes communication particularly useful in cooperative contexts is that it allows people to advertise their intentions to partners. Some work suggests that adults cooperate more after making nonbinding commitments to cooperate (i.e., commitments they do not need to uphold) than when they are not allowed to communicate their intentions to their partners. However, we know little about whether nonbinding commitments play a similar role in children. We addressed this gap by testing 6- to 9-year-old …

The method being used is a quantitative method of random sampling to ask college students if they have ever experienced anxiety and depression, and if it has affected their academic performance. The college students can vary in age, gender, race, and majors. The survey consists of ten multiple choice questions that will measure if the student has experienced anxiety or depression, how often, …

The purpose of this project was to produce new content for the English Program webpages for Dr. Patterson’s course, ENGL 875 Seminar: Writing for the Web. Throughout all stages of this project, we consulted Janice Redish’s book Letting Go of the Words. The first stage of the project was to identify the webpages’ target audiences; this was achieved through the creation of personas that reflected the demographics of users. Through these personas, we developed a series of tasks for a preliminary usability test. Subsequently, we conducted the preliminary test on the existing English Program webpages using test subjects that reflected …

Beyond Greening: The Challenges To Adopting Sustainability In Higher Education., Catherine Hooey, Alicia Mason, James Triplett
Beyond Greening: The Challenges To Adopting Sustainability In Higher Education., Catherine Hooey, Alicia Mason, James Triplett
Faculty Submissions
It is common for colleges and universities to include sustainability in their mission statements and strategic plans. On many campuses, however, sustainability is associated with green practices only, rather than the comprehensive integration of social equity, economic, and environmental principles on which the concept was founded. Here, Hooey et al examine the obstacles to the comprehensive adoption of sustainability in institutions of higher education, in general, and to suggest a conceptual framework of a sustainability culture as one most appropriate for the more effective incorporation of comprehensive practices.

Curriculum Laboratory Libraries In Major Universities And State Colleges Across The United States, Ralph J. Zullo Jr.
Research Problems, 1947-1991
The Curriculum Laboratory at Kansas State College of Pittsburg is a well-equipped and well-staffed center. This study grew from a question that the researcher asked himself: How equipped is our facility compared to other state colleges and universities? In pondering this question, others came to mind: What do their facilities consist of as compared to those of Kansas State College of Pittsburg? What are the materials that make up their laboratory? Who funds a curriculum laboratory? Where are they located on campus? Inquiries revealed the fact that little has been written concerning this type of facility. Francis L. Drag, who …

Motivation Of An Indian Child In A School Situation, Wilda Jacques
Research Problems, 1947-1991
Excerpt: "The successive attempts to educate the American Indian have not produced the result desired by the educators and the American public. [...] The resulting degrees of success and failure are understandable when the purpose of the education was civilization and assimilation and the adoption by the Indians of the white ways of living. [...] The problem is to find ways to motivate the Sioux Indian …

Methods Of Stimulating Reading Interest In The Junior High School, Ada Emerson Wade
Research Problems, 1947-1991
There is good reason for strong interest in the reading that children do or don't do. In today's world reading is an essential skill. Efficient reading is important for success in school, on the job, and in personal life. Citizenship is dependent on knowledge and understanding of the world in which we live. That knowledge is in turn dependent upon reading and upon weighing, understanding, judging, and remembering what we read. The problem is to find and present methods for stimulating interest in reading in junior high school.

A Suggested Unit Of Personality Development With Emphasis On Good Grooming, Rose Mary Reagan
A Suggested Unit Of Personality Development With Emphasis On Good Grooming, Rose Mary Reagan
Research Problems, 1947-1991
All competent authorities agree that personality plays a large part in determining the degree of success that may be achieved in all walks of life. The search for happiness is our most common quest. Everyone needs some "happy isles" if he is to weather the storms of life. If everyone could develop desirable personality traits, learn to get along with other people, make and keep friends, adjust well to life's situations--then we should be able to attain real happiness. Some people attain deep and lasting happiness; others attain scarcely any. One's happiness depends upon the person himself.
