The problem was to make a study of the major areas in which the curriculum in Negro high schools might be expanded to help improve the general well-being of the Negro citizens of Saint Louis, Missouri.

The procedure was to collect data from the records of the Board of Education, secure maps from the City Plan Commission, study the United States census of 1920-1930-1940, and secure data from local welfare and social agencies.

This survey endeavors to trace and present the organization, development, and basic problems confronting vocational education as conducted for Negroes by the Kansas City, Missouri Public School System.

This work is considered under the following headings: History and Development, Census, Course Offerings, and Guidance.

The data for the beginning portion of the study were collected from personal interviews with citizens, school officials, relatives of the man who is credited with instituting the program of vocational education in Kansas City, Missouri, and official Board of Education records.
