Significant change in the counseling field begins in counselor education programs. Concerns of biased, incompetent, and ineffective counseling services for culturally diverse clients plague the mental health profession (ACA, 2021; Sue & Sue, 2016). Rapid shifts in the racial and ethnic demographic composition of American society and the overt expression of hate and violence on the lives of People of Color place a greater demand on mental health professionals to pursue and acquire multicultural competencies (Brown, 2020; Embrick, 2015). Dr. Boyd welcomes and introduces the session. Dr. Gary discusses how students develop their leadership identity by developing various competencies. ORU focuses on developing the competencies, or University outcomes, of spiritual integrity, personal resilience, intellectual pursuit, global engagement, and bold vision to help develop whole leaders for the whole world. Dr. Gary continues to share how faculty may implicitly and explicitly integrate a variety of leadership resources through instructional strategies and in the curriculum. The development and examples of key program assessments (KPAs) are shared. Dr. Boyd opens the presentation. Dr. Shannon (B.S. Sports Management) begins by providing an overview of aligning program and ORU outcomes. Prof. Locke (B.S. Mathematics) walks through how current assignments were chosen to be used as key program assessments and then how the rubrics were revised to improve alignment. Dr. Valentz (B.S. Nursing) discusses how to improve the foundational alignment between program outcomes and the criterion (rubric row headings) used to measure them. In this paper, we address the need for developing critical consciousness in students in institutions of learning. Grounded in Freire’s thoughts on critical pedagogy and drawing from studies and research on critical consciousness, we contend that developing students who transform culture must involve raising their level of critical awareness and increasing social engagement and critical action.
