Data science has gained the attention of various industries, educators, parents, and students thinking about their future careers. Statistics departments have traditionally offered data science courses for a long time. The main objective of these courses is to examine the fundamental concepts and theories. However, teaching data science courses has also expanded to other disciplines due to the vast amount of data being collected by numerous modern applications. Also, someone needs to learn how to collect and process data, especially from industrial devices, because of the recent development of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. Hence, integrating data science into the …

This paper describes the development of a short course of Geometric Dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) for Mechanical Engineering (ME)/Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) students in their freshman/sophomore classes. This class-infusion project was assisted and validated by an ASME Standards and Certification Engineer and was jointly sponsored by the ASME Committee on Engineering Education and the ASME Council on Standards and Certification. To assess the performance of the project, an instrument was developed with multiple-choice problems and survey questions for the students. The results of a field test in a sophomore manufacturing class are presented. The module is available at the ASME …

Lessons From Two Years Of Eportfolio Implementation In Engineering Technology Courses, Orlando M. Ayala, Otilia Popescu Jun 2018

Lessons From Two Years Of Eportfolio Implementation In Engineering Technology Courses, Orlando M. Ayala, Otilia Popescu

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

In an undergraduate as well as in a graduate academic setting, an ePortfolio is a collection of student work designed to exhibit student’s achievements, which often includes student’s reflective commentaries. While in academia ePortfolios are used to document the student learning process over time, they have been also well received by employers as work portfolios or showcases. This paper provides detailed explanations of two years of implementation of ePortfolio activities in junior and senior level engineering technology courses. The goal of the paper is to present to the community the best practices learned during the implementation and to provide information …

Many students have the desire to have internships and part-time employment during their academic careers. Often students in their freshman and sophomore years in four year engineering and technology programs find it difficult to be competitive against more senior students for these positions. This paper discusses how students, in the Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) program at ________________University, through taking CAD and Solid Modeling courses early in their academic careers are well suited to be competitive in obtaining internships and part time employment. This paper discusses the MET programs first two years’ curriculum and how it prepares the students to enter …
