This applied dissertation was designed to provide law enforcement and corrections administrators with current information about the components of basic training that can affect the retention of newly employed trainees during basic training. Attracting qualified applicants for law-enforcement jobs is a challenging task, and the preemployment screening and hiring processes are very expensive for agencies already plagued with reduced budgets. By the time a trainee actually makes it to basic training, a great deal of time and money has already been invested by the agency, and the trainee becomes an investment. The program involved the development of materials for the instruction and testing of geography related performance standards to the American History curriculum. The program’s aim were twofold: 1) to assist the teacher in that materials were not available and 2) to address the problem of low achievement of the students in their basic geographical knowledge and its application to American History. The problems addressed by this practicum were identified by both teacher questionnaire and student pre-tests. Improving Spelling Performance Of Sixth Grade Students Using Eclectic Spelling Strategies And A Cognitive-Based Approach, Marilyn L. Frieling

The poor spelling performance of a group of sixth graders was addressed by utilizing the Informal Spelling Inventory suggested by Mann and Suiter (1974). This criterion – referenced test determined that nine members of the sixth grade class scored well below grade level expectations in spelling. A cognitive – based approach and eclectic spelling strategies were implemented with the target group in order to improve their spelling achievement. The results indicated a cognitive-based approach through phonetic instruction and rule generalizations increased levels of achievement in the target group. The author developed and implemented a program to increase the preschool disadvantaged child's ability to follow oral directions. The program's aims were to help the child to follow one, two, and three step oral directions given by a teacher which is considered a minimum competency for entrance into the district's kindergarten reading program. The writer applied an increased frequency of general music instruction given to a target group of kindergarten children in order to measure its impact on auditory memory sequencing skills. A control group received the general music instruction on a less frequent basis. The writer, a music teacher specialist, theorized that skills learned in the music class setting would transfer to other (academic) classroom settings, as measured by a standardized testing instrument and a classroom teacher survey checklist. The writer developed and implemented a program that would improve the eighth grade girls' cardiovascular scores with aerobics. The practicum setting was a junior high school located in a southern urban metropolitan area. The program's aims helped the eighth grade girls to improve their cardiovascular fitness, to adapt to stress, have a good self-image, and. to improve their physical being.
