A Model For Determining The Need For Chronic Disease Prevention In The Community:Development And Use., Janet Garzone Kosidlak

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The traditional concerns of public health have been the promotion of health, the prevention of disease, and the prevention of premature death. As death from communicable diseases and conditions of pregnancy and early infancy decrease, public health interests are being expanded toward the prevention of premature death from chronic diseases. Mortality rates were the most common indicators used to describe the burden of chronic disease problems in the community. Mortality rates are based on the number of incidences per 100,000 population. A relatively newer indicator is called Years of Potential Life Lost. Years of Potential Life Lost represent the number …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The purpose of this study was to compare College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) scores between Florida International University (FIU) and Miami-Dade Community College (MDCC) students to see if there were any significant differences. For many years critics of the two-year college have maintained that the quality of education offered these students suffers and that the community/junior college acts as a handicap to those students attending it. All students who took the CLAST at Florida International University (N= 278) and all students who took the CLAST at Miami-Dade Community College (N = 1,076) during the June, 1987 administration had their …

The objectives of the practicum were to increase the number of trained teachers by 60 percent; thereby increasing the instructional time GH was taught, and to place, and organize all commercial instructional-support materials within the elementary school. The author designed a six-week long training program, conducted an inventory of all GH materials, and color coded all commercial instructional-support materials by phase and grade level. The researcher received administrative support from the school's administration to …

Publishing companies' consultants plan and implement staff development programs in reading to meet inservice needs of school districts throughout the United States. The changes that are occurring in reading education are impacting the role of the classroom teacher. Inservice programs that were previously successful must now be evaluated to determine if they meet the current needs of teachers. Studies that assess student achievement indicate many students graduate from high school without basic skills essential for them to be productive members of society. The most basic of these skills is the ability to think. As a result of these studies there …

Guidelines, Policies, And Curricula For Aids Education For Associate Degree Nursing Students At Long Beach City College., Shirley M. Naret

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) epidemic has created an unparalleled public health threat that has not yet been adequately addressed. Despite the gravity of the situation, Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) programs have not yet responded effectively. The current lack of AIDS curricula covering the ethical and practical aspects of nursing care to this growing patient population represents a serious shortcoming. In order to address this deficiency, the proposed research study utilized data from several relevant populations in the development of a set of AIDS Guidelines and Policies and a Model AIDS curriculum for nursing programs. The research design was largely …

They also received instruction in determining relationships to enable them to solve analogies. Instructional strategies included: modeling, verbal rehearsal, metacognition, peer tutoring, manipulative learning, and discovery learning. The students' progress was measured by Precision Teaching (a monitoring system involving charting to document growth). Inservice training was provided by …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The costs associated with clinical education in physical therapy and other health professions have been debated by educational and hospital administrators in recent years. The assumption has been that these programs incur a cost to the clinical facility. To date, the physical therapy literature has been limited in cost-benefit studies with no definitive conclusions. This study examined the costs of Clinical education in a selective entry-level master's degree program in physical therapy to determine what monetary costs and benefits accrue to clinical affiliation sites and what factors are related to the monetary costs or benefits of clinical education. Study participants …

To explore these issues, group grade point averages, graduation rate and retention data were gathered. Other issues include the quantitative impact of the HSEC holder on higher education and …

Using Whole Language Materials In The Adult Esol Classroom, Edward W. Schiffer Jul 1989

Using Whole Language Materials In The Adult Esol Classroom, Edward W. Schiffer

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Many English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students live in areas in which the English language is not the principal means of communication in everyday life. However, because English is the principal language of the broader society, non-English speakers are motivated to attend ESOL classes in order to participate in the mainstream and to receive society's benefits. The classroom is the principal source of meaningful English input for these students. Opportunities for second language acquisition are limited once the students are outside the classroom. This reality makes the quantity and quality of language presented in the classroom a crucial …

Walk Around The Clock: Third Grade Students Learn To Tell Time, Janice Irington Jul 1989

Walk Around The Clock: Third Grade Students Learn To Tell Time, Janice Irington

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Although time-telling has been an essential part of the curriculum since kindergarten, there were third grade students at the practicum site who were unable to tell time by five and one minute intervals. Results from a student survey, teacher survey and a county standardized test confirmed this statement. Since telling time is an abstract concept, a more concrete approach was used in presenting the skill. Piaget's theory that logical ideas can be applied and understood if presented in concrete form was the basis for teaching this concept. The goal for this practicum was to improve the targeted students' ability to …
