Influence Of Autism On Fathering Style Among Black American Fathers: A Narrative Inquiry, Michael Hannon, Ebony E. White, Tyce Nadrich

Attention to Black men's fathering styles, especially those who have children with autism, has been largely overlooked. This study presents the narratives of six Black American fathers of individuals with autism and how autism influences their fathering practice. Results suggest fathering individuals with autism can yield greater patience in fathering practice, amidst some normative challenges associated with the diagnosis. Family therapists serving Black families and fathers of children with autism can enhance the therapeutic alliance by acknowledging cultural influences on fathering and family practices.
