The Adolescent Substance Use Risk Continuum: A Cultural, Strengths-Based Approach To Case Conceptualization, Alexis Miller, Jennifer Cook

Many theories are used to conceptualize adolescent substance use, yet none adequately assist mental health professionals in assessing adolescents’ strengths and risk factors while incorporating cultural factors. The authors reviewed common adolescent substance abuse theories and their strengths and limitations, and offer a new model to conceptualize adolescent substance use: The Adolescent Substance Use Risk Continuum. We posit that this strengths-based continuum enables clinicians to decrease stigma and offer hope to adolescents and their caregivers, as it integrates relevant factors to strengthen families and minimize risk. Emotional Regulation And Interpersonal Effectiveness As Mechanisms Of Change For Treatment Outcomes Within A Dbt Program For Adolescents, A. Stephen Lenz, Garry Del Conte, K. Michelle Hollenbaugh, Karisse A. Callender

Predictive modeling was used to identify the degree that hypothesized moderators of dialectical behavioral therapy for adolescents (DBT-A) treatment outcomes predicted anxiety and depression symptoms over time. Participants were 66 adolescents (41 girls; 25 boys) with a mean age of 15.38 years (SD = 1.51) who completed a 7-week DBT-A intervention. Analyses revealed convergent models, wherein emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness were substantial predictors of change in the symptoms of anxiety, F(4, 65) = 23.21, p < .01, R2 = .60, and depression, F(4, 65) = 29.76, p < .01, R2 = .66.

Measuring Perceived Social Support In Mexican American Youth: Psychometric Properties Of The Multidimensional Scale Of Perceived Social Support, Lisa Edwards

The utility of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) (Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet, & Farley, 1988) was investigated within a sample of 290 Mexican American adolescents. Results suggested that the three-subscale structure (Family, Friends, and Significant Other) of the MSPSS was confirmed, and adequate internal reliability for the three scales was demonstrated as well. Support for construct validity was found by evaluating correlations from a perceived family support subscale as well as a satisfaction with family measure.
