The Effects Of Student And Behavior-Specific Praise On Students Who Receive Special Education Services, Emily Ward, Haven Ackerman
GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium
The purpose of this research was to determine the effectiveness of behavior specific praise on continuous student attention to tasks. Behavior specific praise is defined as a positive statement directed toward a student or group of students that acknowledged a desired behavior in specific, observable, and measurable terms. Past studies have shown a positive correlation between positive reinforcement and the students' engagement in the general education classroom. Current research also indicates that behavior specific praise has proven to be significantly beneficial for a wide range of students including students in the general education, special education, and gifted classroom. For this …

Theoretical framework: Critical pedagogy, disability studies & postmodernity. Disability studies is a burgeoning field in its nascency. Questions of identity and what is normal through the eyes of people that live in what society calls a disability, calls into question the deficit-medical model and what is worthwhile learning. It re-embraces the origins of disability rights in the civil rights movement. The overarching goal of the Institute for Interdisciplinary STEM Education (iå_STEMe) at Georgia Southern University is to improve student engagement and learning outcomes in STEM courses through immersion in authentic, real-world, problem-based and place-based educational settings. To accomplish this goal, iå_STEMe has partnered with 10 middle and high schools located in Georgia to incorporate a series of reasoning modalities developed to meet the requirements of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to develop STEM literate citizens capable of making informed decisions, and to open up opportunities to fill the growing need for STEM professionals. The reasoning modalities developed are Complex …

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium
Goals and Objectives: Our institution, Georgia Southern University, has selected a Quality Enhanced Plan (QEP) focusing on fostering effective student writing and associated thinking skills across all college and in the disciplines. In addition to the 1st Student Learning Outcome (SLO) of demonstrating argumentation, analysis, and synthesis skills through writing, the 2nd SLO in our QEP highlights students’ engagement in process writing. In this presentation, we will describe how the qualitative technique, along with the quantitative method, have been used to capture students’ engagement in process writing through a pre-post design.
Theoretical Framework: Since the 1980s, writing pedagogy …

I propose a study on China’s English Fever under the interdisciplinary framework of cultural studies. Having taught English at the university level in China, I have had the opportunity not only to witness such a English-learning phenomenon that has been sweeping the country for about three decades, but also to teach students who are incredibly enthusiastic in learning English, regardless of their majors and of their initially drastically different English proficiency levels. What always intrigues me is the question of why: Why are Chinese people so dedicated to learning English? The proposed study is an attempt to look for some …
