Aviation Maintenance Instructional Design: How To Teach The Millennial And Gen-Z Cohorts, Danita Baghdasarin

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

The next two decades of air travel will see an increase in passenger demand and advances in aircraft technologies and infrastructure. Future aviation maintenance technicians will work in a highly technical and demanding environment, and their training must account for these challenges and generational characteristics. This paper discusses trends that will shape the work environment and characteristics of millennials and Gen-Z and makes recommendations for training the next cohort of aviation maintenance technicians.

Small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) are increasingly being used to conduct atmospheric research. Because of the dynamic nature and inhomogeneity of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), the ability of instrumented sUAS to make on-demand 3-dimensional high-resolution spatial measurements of atmospheric parameters makes them particularly suited to ABL investigations. Both fixed-wing and multirotor sUAS have been used for ABL investigations. Most investigations to date have included in-situ measurement of thermodynamic quantities such as temperature, pressure and humidity. Composite materials are utilized in many industries today due to its high performance and lightweight. However, the part manufacturing process of traditional composites is complicated and often involves high cost. The molds used for composite manufacturing are usually one of the contributors to the high part manufacturing cost. The authors demonstrated in this paper a manufacturing process for a carbon fiber reinforced composite rocket payload housing using an additively manufactured polylactic acid (PLA) payload housing core. Educators have incorporated technology into flight training for decades. These devices have increased in complexity since the Link trainers of the early 20th century, resulting in aviation training devices, full flight simulators, and other technologies currently used in flight training programs.
