This study duplicated the survey research of Robinson-Zanartu and Majel-Dixon in their 1996 article "Parent Voices: American Indian Relationships with Schools" published in The Journal of American Indian Education. Two hypotheses were investigated in this study. The first hypothesis was that due to the increase in multicultural education training that teachers receive as pre-service teachers and in professional development, there would be an increase in Native American parent/community satisfaction with the schools that service their children. Currently, in the United States there is incongruence between student demographics in public schools and the characteristics of American K-12 teachers. More specifically, there are growing numbers of students of color, while the majority of teachers are White, middle-class females. Given the increasing pluralism in U.S. schools, it is imperative that teachers have multicultural self-efficacy as well as an awareness of White privilege in order to be prepared to teach in a culturally competent manner. With the current emphasis on improving reading and comprehension in the school system, many teachers find it difficult to meet this challenge to providing increased reading time for students and still maintain the required classroom instruction in other areas of curriculum. Additionally, present teacher education classes stress the importance of recognizing the diversity in our classroom, school, community, and the world. The use of multicultural literature to create lessons across the curriculum is a good way to address literacy and diversity concerns.
