The intent of this research was to investigate the use of visual supports for individuals who suffer from Self-Injurious Behaviors (SIB) stemming from developmental disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It has been determined that there are many causes of SIB in individuals with ASD, and while some theories are no more than untested assumptions, there is validated research on behavioral patterns that suggests that evidence-based practice of visuals supports may effectively be used as part of an intervention to modify behaviors. Autism Centered Theatre: The Use Of Drama To Improve Social Skills For Children On The Autism Spectrum, Olivia Rhoades

This study explored the benefits of a week-long drama camp on the socials skills of children on the autism spectrum through the perspectives of parents and instructors. Data collection included pre- and post-camp questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results revealed that daily intensive exposure to drama and theatre can be a viable option to promote the development of social skills among children on the autism spectrum. The activities seemed to promote particular gains in caregiver/peer interaction, adjusting to routines, eye contact, and social perceptions/cues. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices are invaluable tools for people who have difficulties communicating verbally. However, advancements in technology accentuate the need for training to utilize devices effectively. This qualitative research study examined the perceptions and experiences of parents and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) regarding the training in and maintenance of AAC devices. Previous literature reveals the commonality that parents encounter difficulties in learning AAC technologies, as well as updating their child’s devices. In this study, a three year-old boy with autism named Alex’s communication needs were evaluated and then his current communication program was compared to other communication programs. The programs must have included an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for use with children in Alex’s cognitive state and chronological age, a final goal of verbal communication, and were tested on children in the autism spectrum. Alex had been taught using the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), so PECS was chosen to be analyzed for this review for its efficacy with children similar to Alex.
