Many strides have been made in addressing equity, diversity and social justice in the field of education. However there has remained a gap in the representation of the voices of Teachers of Color. Current literature reveals that there is underlying systemic racism deterring People of Color from pursuing a career in education for a variety of reasons including social, financial, racial and political barriers. Applying Critical Race Theory, critical studies of Whiteness and Microaggressions this study analyzes the experiences of Teachers of Color through their educational career. Goals of the DUOC Safe Zone Program:

• To increase the overall campus community’s understanding and awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues

• To provide a greater sense of safety for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender student community

• To offer information to straight allies in positions where they may be in contact with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people (as classmates, roommates, friends, residents, students, staff, faculty, etc.)

• To act as a resource of information regarding homophobia, heterosexism, transphobia and LGBTQ issues on the DUOC campus.

The exhibit, which celebrates diversity on campus, is on display in the Community Gallery on the second floor of Alemany Library during normal business hours through January 30, 2014. Among noted local, regional, national and international artists selected to participate in the exhibition are Julie-Anne Cosgrove, Jaime Crespo, John Fadeff, Jason Gonzalez, Andrea Speer Hibbard, Jennifer Hirshfield, Walid Khalaf, Molly Perez, Yvette Ramos and Raul del Rio.
