Guiding Sixth Grade Language Development In Mathematical Content Acquisition Through Student Centered Siop Instruction, Leah Callister

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Mathematics is considered a universal language for students. However, now common core standards require students to explain their conceptual understanding through words, numbers, and verbal explanations. Student proficiency in the universal language is impeded when they do not speak the primary language. It is difficult for the teacher to teach both the academic language and mathematical concepts, when the vocabulary is not accessible to all students. Conversely it is difficult for students to follow the pacing of the class while having to translate and gain a conceptual understanding of the subject. The purpose of this study is to increase student …

This study employs a qualitative approach. Information was gathered from a purposive sample from two professionals. Data were gathered from their responses to a questionnaire that addressed contemporary issues that young girls face regarding self-esteem. Results indicated that young …

Serving The Student-Survivor: Exploring The Transitional And Psychosocial Needs Of School-Aged Children With Cancer And Chronic Illness, Devon Malia Lanin

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

The advances in medicine today have created an emerging population of student-survivors, school-aged children living with and/or recovering from serious health conditions (Bauman, 2010). Each school day in the United States, 46 young people, or the equivalent of two classrooms of students, learn they have cancer (Cure Search National Childhood Cancer Foundation, 2010). These statistics reflect the fact that cancer is one of the most chronic illnesses in childhood. Most serious childhood medical issues will have life-long ramifications. This qualitative research study is comprised of an in-depth review of the research literature and the responses and information gathered from two …

Culturally Diverse And Underserved Populations Of Gifted Students In The United States And In Taiwan: Equitable Access To Gifted Education, Ya-Ting Ho

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

There is a continuing increase in the African American and Hispanic student populations in public schools. The students who are invited to gifted programs are overwhelmingly White. This is the situation in schools in the United States and also in Taiwan. Misunderstanding or unawareness of culture difference among educators might contribute to underrepresentation of minority students in gifted programs. The research literature reviewed indicates that a deficit in orientation, ineffective teacher referral policies, and the use of culturally biased assessments are the major reasons responsible for low rates of identification for gifted minority students. The purpose of this thesis is …

Teachers Creating Safe School Environments: Prevention Of Elementary Student-To-Student Bullying, Heather B. Gant Bradley

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Student-to-student bullying is still a current issue within elementary schools nationwide. Educators are often unaware, improperly trained and/or unwilling to help in student bullying incidences. Without training or willingness, teachers often are driven into silence and inaction, effectively putting the wellbeing of students at risk. The present study examines this topic through previous literature, gathers data to raise further awareness and better understanding of this issue, and provides proactive bullying prevention strategies for teachers. The present study collects data quantitatively and qualitatively with the conduction of surveys and personal interviews of pre-service and veteran educators respectively. Findings reveal increasing efforts …

Identifying Characteristics In Low Ses And Bicultural Parent Groups That Enhance Their Capacity To Enact Successful Change, Karen Lynn Rosenquist May 2013

Identifying Characteristics In Low Ses And Bicultural Parent Groups That Enhance Their Capacity To Enact Successful Change, Karen Lynn Rosenquist

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

The relationship between bicultural parents, low socio-economic parents and the public school system is made tenuous in part by cultural disparities between school officials and parents. The greater the disparity, the more likely parent groups are to be silenced and the more likely they are to refrain from the role of change agents or advocates for school reform. To contemplate what characteristics disadvantaged parent groups should possess to enact desired changes at the school or district level, this study culls from research in several areas of academic literature: parent involvement and student achievement, community organizing, and change management. Each of …

A Dialogue About Race: African-American Teachers Discussing History And Experience Of African-Americans In The Teaching Profession, Christina Clair Owens

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

The achievement gap in the United States develops when millions of children enter the classroom on their first day of kindergarten. The sociological effects of the achievement gap as it relates to the racial and socio-economic strata create cyclical, systemic problems in our country that ultimately affect the next generations of children in our schools. The purpose of this study is to learn from adult African-American teachers about the issues confronting African-American high school students who no longer have role models in the classroom, as was previously the case, prior to school desegregation. A former teacher, of African-American history, was …

Redundancy, Discrimination And Corruption In The Multibillion-Dollar Business Of College Admissions Testing, Monica Ellen Rizzo Dec 2012

Redundancy, Discrimination And Corruption In The Multibillion-Dollar Business Of College Admissions Testing, Monica Ellen Rizzo

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Most American colleges and universities require standardized entrance exams when making admissions decisions. Scores on these exams help determine if, when and where students will be allowed to pursue higher education. These scores are also used to determine eligibility for merit based financial aid. This testing persists even though half of the institutions that require the test scores from applicants have no idea if the scores offer any valuable information about prospective students. The purpose of this study is to examine the biases inherent in standardized college entrance exams, their validity as predictors of college completion, the actual value of …

Road To Equality In South African Education: A Qualitative Study, Kevin O'Brien

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

South Africa is currently experiencing a crisis in its educational systems that if not addressed, could threaten the stability of the newly established democracy. A lack of access to quality education and severe shortage of skilled trained educators is perpetuating vestiges of the old apartheid state in the nation. Approximately 6,000 students graduate from South Africa’s teacher training programs each year to meet the demand of over 12.1 million learners (Evoh, 2007). This study examines the current crisis facing the educational system of postapartheid South Africa and more specifically how the LEAP (Langa Educational Assistance Program) school of Science and …
