Visual Literacy And Reading Motivation Understanding The Impact Of Illustrations And Images On An Individual’S Engagement With Text, Anna Mccuaig
Honor Scholar Theses
Education systems are currently facing an issue not of illiteracy, but aliteracy due to their emphasis on easily measured and taught content that ultimately removes much of what makes reading relatable and personally rewarding to students. Common Core State Standards, Accelerated Reader, and Hooked on Phonics are examples of measurement heavy programs which emphasize a standardized education that removes the art and connection that comes with literature. Before these programs, visuals have been intertwined with literature in various forms for centuries. Theater, the film, or even architecture has an important ability to create an immersive experience which connects its viewers …

Lessons From An Exemplar Elementary Robotics Program: Implications For Learning And Life, Paige Price
Honor Scholar Theses
As robotics is becoming more popular across the United States, there is little research to show the long term effects of robotics participation on students both within and outside of school. Through examining literature surrounding robotics, known themes of collaboration, problem solving, and an obvious growth in areas surrounding STEM have been identified. This qualitative study took the general information provided by literature and focused on a specific case study of two fifth grade elementary teams from Woodview Elementary School in Nappanee, Indiana. Using a technique called methods triangulation, new emerging themes were found between obtaining eight of the students' …

The Power Of Inclusion: Deconstructing “Normality” In Primary Education, Madison Smith
Honor Scholar Theses
The goal of this thesis is to critically analyze the structures currently present within the education system that exclude individuals possessing certain brains and bodies from the socially constructed “norm.” The lens of critical disability studies is utilized to shed light on the spatial, curricular, historical, and disciplinary elements of the education system as we know it. Specifically, this thesis focuses on the primary education classroom, since students solidify many of their biases and schemas about the world and people around them at this juncture. After reviewing the ableist rhetoric that manifests itself in schools and society as a result …

The Disaster That Lies Behind The Chalkboard: An Autoethnography About Education & The Power, Privilege And Diversity Requirement, Shafrarisi Bonner
Honor Scholar Theses
This thesis seeks to analyze the racial climate of the classroom, using my personal experiences at my predominately white institution (PWI) as its foundation. My experiences at DePauw University, both academically and socially, has played a key role in how I have navigated campus. These experiences are further analyzed using a Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Feminist lens. By analyzing the studies and research done by these scholars, this study aims to assess how whiteness operates and is maintained within the classroom, especially in DePauw University’s Power, Privilege and Diversity courses. This study also outlines the impact of classrooms that …

Identifying Exceptionally Performing Third Grades In Indiana: Who Is To Blame?, Emily Troyer
Identifying Exceptionally Performing Third Grades In Indiana: Who Is To Blame?, Emily Troyer
Honor Scholar Theses
Federal and state governments want to know that their constituents' tax dollars are being spent well, and that public education is serving the People well. To assess a school's efficacy, they calculate an accountability score. Although state-level scoring systems vary, neither the federal law nor a single state's law require that demographic characteristics of a school's student population be held constant when it is being evaluated. This complicates the assessment of a school's adequacy because factors outside of a school's control influence student performance; when a school is evaluated without taking this into account, it is being unfairly credited with …

Reaching Further: The Role Of Distance In College Undermatching, Lois Miller
Reaching Further: The Role Of Distance In College Undermatching, Lois Miller
Honor Scholar Theses
This thesis explores factors explaining why so many high-achieving, low-income students apply to and enroll at universities with relatively low academic standards, despite generous financial aid packages and evidence that these students would be successful at colleges that are more selective. Amazon's Mechanical Turk was used to gather data and a probit analysis confirms an established result that low-income students are more likely to undermatch. The primary contribution of this work is the result that as the distance between a student's home and the university they attend increases, the probability that the student will undermatch decreases. The decrease in likelihood …

Education Or Indoctrination? World War Ii Ideologies Under Leaders Hitler And Mussolini - Education Systems And Propaganda Campaigns, Allison Hills
Honor Scholar Theses
This thesis analyses education as a potential force of indoctrination by looking at two powerful leaders during World War II: Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. Following the abstract and acknowledgements, this thesis continues into the personal statement and positionality. Next, there is an intensive literature review, consisting of: a historical background before World War II, sections regarding psychology of education and leaders and followers. Then comes the purpose of the thesis, followed by the methods used to obtain data. After the background information, I go directly into talking about Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini using backgrounds from their countries to …

The Allure Of Music: Implications For Academically Gifted Students, Erin Tolar
Honor Scholar Theses
This thesis explores the complex interactions of academic giftedness as it relates to the pursuit of music. The literature review covers some of the main topics of giftedness, including what it means to be gifted, identification of giftedness, and music in gifted programs. Research was conducted at a small liberal arts college with a School of Music on academically gifted students. The survey and follow-up interview were constructed to assess whether academically gifted music students were more likely to experience conflict about their choice of major than academically gifted liberal arts students, non-academically gifted School of Music students, or non-academically …

School Smart, Katherine Tozer
School Smart, Katherine Tozer
Honor Scholar Theses
In School Smart, I cap off my career as a student asking questions many do when childhood grows distant: What happened to us and how did we get here? Fed up with a society that gives individuals all the credit (or blame) for their education outcomes, the following essays crack open the stiff binding on “education stories” with hindsight, history, and a whole bunch of data. School Smart gives six examples of different women at different schools who put faces to murky concepts like “the achievement gap,” “the accountability movement,” and “special needs education.” To reform education, we need to …
