From Unicorn To University Professor: Programs Break Down Barriers For Underrepresented Students

As employers seek to diversify their workforces, demand has never been greater for well-educated employees from underrepresented backgrounds. The university’s McNair Scholars program, a federally funded TRIO program, guides juniors and seniors from low-income, first-generation or underrepresented backgrounds to PhDs and academic careers. Going a step further, DePaul created the Arnold Mitchem Fellows program to prepare sophomores for research-based careers and the McNair program. Mitchem also serves juniors and seniors who fall outside of the McNair program’s narrow parameters, such as students pursuing a combined MD/PhD or an MFA.

Understanding Stem Identity Construction: An Ethnography Of An All-Girls Stem Club, Pasiewicz Marie Loyola

This qualitative ethnography follows 11 high-school girls through their experiences in an all-girls after-school STEM club in a privileged school setting. This study uses Gee’s concept of identity and a feminist poststrutural framework to understand their experiences and how they use the club to re/construct their gendered STEM identities. Through interviews, focus groups, observations, and document analysis, this study found that the after-school club offers girls a space to not only learn about STEM, but also provides a space for girls to understand the gendered nature of their interactions with peers and adults in STEM classrooms. The present research explores the experiences of Syrian refugee students in American schools. This qualitative research project is based in interviews of five Syrian students from refugee backgrounds aged between 11-18 years old who had come to the United States after the civil war raged in Syria in 2011. This qualitative research examines the educational barriers and supports, from the Syrian refugee students' perspectives, by understanding their educational and social experiences. Based on the findings, these five Syrian refugee students had both positive and negative experiences in the United States schools. Major themes were found in the data that are …

This study asked, what value is created by two education practitioner-scholars who engage in a years-long sustained dialogue about value-creating, or Soka, education inspired by Daisaku Ikeda’s ethos of value-creative dialogue? The purpose of this study was to analyze Ikeda’s philosophical perspectives and practice of value-creative dialogue and to use this analysis as a framework for analyzing the author’s own inner transformation and value creation through dialogue with her friend and interlocutor for the study. This dissertation proposes a further conceptualization of intersectional identity as a fundamental topic in education reform research. Overlaying the theoretical lenses of Critical Race Theory and intersectionality, a modified narrative inquiry methodology was used to investigate the self-perceived identities among seven women of color, who are alumnae of an all-girls secondary school, in their current context of higher education. Teacher knowledge in early literacy instruction has been questioned in the field for over 20 years. A theoretical framework outlined by Chall, coupled with the findings of the National Reading Panel, provides a strong foundation for the disciplinary knowledge required to teach children to read. The Basic Language Constructs Survey, a tool developed by Cantrell, Joshi, and Washburn, was designed to evaluate teachers’ knowledge, skills, and perceptions associated with the language and literacy concepts necessary for early literacy instruction. The research design applied in this study was a convergent parallel mixed-method approach that included qualitative and quantitative data collection. The quantitative data accrued through the Teacher’s Sense of Efficacy Survey (TSES) survey. The quantitative data also included a collection of English language learner’s reading-proficiency-level scores from a large-scale English-language proficiency test: Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to State for ELLs 2.0 (ACCESS for ELLs 2.0) administered in 2017. The quantitative data from the TSES survey and the ACCESS test were analyzed using the Pearson correlation coefficient. There is a growing number of white female novice teachers who are entering the field of urban education and many prospective/novice teachers overall that are feeling unprepared to reach culturally diverse urban youth. This study employs an anti-deficit perspective in exploring how the parents of first generation, low-income African American students positively influence their child’s choice to attend college. This study examines the positive direct and indirect actions taken by African American parents with limited monetary resources to encourage their child to decide to attend college when they have not finished a four-year degree themselves. This phenomenological study describes emergent themes related to how gay, male alumni perceive their experiences of attending an American Catholic institution of higher education. Utilizing a modified version of Seidman’s phenomenological interview protocol, six gay, male alumni of various American Catholic institution of higher education were interviewed in an attempt to arrive at the essence of attending a college or university where Church teachings and campus culture intersected with the sexual orientation of certain community members. University internationalization involves a complex set of initiatives that provide students and faculty with opportunities to gain global perspectives and intercultural skills which can enhance human capital. Typically, these activities are evaluated in terms of participation numbers or financial costs. But little attention is paid to understanding the intangible benefits of internationalization activities.
