Using Open Datasets And Simulations In Laboratories, Jim Crumley
Using Open Datasets And Simulations In Laboratories, Jim Crumley
Physics Faculty Publications
While advances in instrumentation physics have made many areas more accessible to undergraduate physics laboratories, other areas are still beyond reach. Open data sets and simulations can open up some other frontiers of physics, such as Space Physics and Astronomy. In this talk, I will give an overview of some resources for open data and simulations, and then describe my experiences using these tools in both introductory and advanced labs in our curriculum.

Creating My Own Story: Catholic Women’S College Students Narrating Their Lives, Kathryn A. E. Enke, Kelly T. Winters, Rebecca Ropers-Huilman
Creating My Own Story: Catholic Women’S College Students Narrating Their Lives, Kathryn A. E. Enke, Kelly T. Winters, Rebecca Ropers-Huilman

Given the complex and gendered messages college women receive about their future professional and personal lives, a woman’s college experiences play an important role in helping her make difficult life choices. In this article, we present a narrative analysis of the envisioned futures of students at two Catholic women’s colleges in the Midwestern United States. Participants drew on a number of narrative themes when creating their rhetorical future lives, including sequencing or juggling multiple priorities, opting out of future work or family roles, using overarching principles to make decisions about future roles, and maintaining resistance to planning. Our findings suggest …
A Cognitive Approach To Teaching Strategies, Emily Esch
A Cognitive Approach To Teaching Strategies, Emily Esch
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Our knowledge of how the mind works is growing rapidly. One area of particular interest to philosophy teachers is research on reasoning and decision making processes. I explore one model of human cognition that offers new ways of thinking about how to teach philosophical skills. The bulk of the paper is dedicated to exposition of the model and the evidence that supports it; at the end of the paper, I suggest ways these findings might be incorporated into the classroom.
The Role Of Gesture In Spatial And Non-Spatial Learning In Children And Adults, Gwendolyn Marrin, Amanda Olsen
The Role Of Gesture In Spatial And Non-Spatial Learning In Children And Adults, Gwendolyn Marrin, Amanda Olsen
Psychology Student Work
The purpose of this study was to identify whether gesture differentially affects spatial or non-spatial language comprehension and memory in both children and adults. Previous research (i.e. Goldin-Meadow, 1996, 2001; McNeill, 1992, 2005) examines only the role of gesture in learning without addressing development. For this study, participant’s baseline gesture rate is recorded and then stories containing either spatial or non-spatial components are read to the participants. Participants then receive factual and convergent comprehension questions. While answering, they either gesture naturally, are required to gesture, or are told not to gesture. A three-term inference problem task (Knauff & Johnson-Laird, 2002) …
A Hands-On Activity To Introduce The Effects Of Transmission By An Invasive Species, Barbara May
A Hands-On Activity To Introduce The Effects Of Transmission By An Invasive Species, Barbara May
Biology Faculty Publications
This activity engages students to better understand the impact of transmission by invasive species. Using dice, poker chips, and paper plates, an entire class mimics the spread of an invasive species within a geographic region. The activity can be modified and conducted at the K-16 levels.
Engaging Students In A Bioinformatics Activity To Introduce Gene Structure And Function, Barbara J. May
Engaging Students In A Bioinformatics Activity To Introduce Gene Structure And Function, Barbara J. May
Biology Faculty Publications
Bioinformatics spans many fields of biological research and plays a vital role in mining and analyzing data. Therefore, there is an ever-increasing need for students to understand not only what can be learned from this data, but also how to use basic bioinformatics tools. This activity is designed to provide secondary and undergraduate biology students to a hands-on activity meant to explore and understand gene structure with the use of basic bioinformatic tools. Students are provided an “unknown” sequence from which they are asked to use a free online gene finder program to identify the gene. Students then predict the …

This is a report showing the assessment results for the MapCores (MAthematics, Physics, COmputer science REsearch Scholars) program at the College of Saint Benedict. Started in 2009, MapCores is a cohort-based program designed to increase women's interest and achievement in mathematics, physics, computer science and engineering. The report was submitted for the National Science Foundation grant number 0965705.
