A Mathematician Weighs In On The Evolution Debate, Kris H. Green
A Mathematician Weighs In On The Evolution Debate, Kris H. Green
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
There are a variety of reasons underlying the lack of public acceptance for the theory of evolution in the United States. An overlooked cause is related to problems with the mathematics curriculum in the K-12 setting. In this essay, we examine this relationship and propose changes to the mathematics curriculum that could improve mathematical thinking while also providing a basis for understanding theories, like evolution, that are poorly understood.

Who is a mathematician? What does it mean to do mathematics? I discuss my process in solving a math problem, and what it meant to me.
Comparing The Cognitive Demand Of Traditional And Reform Algebra 1 Textbooks, Allison M. Park
Comparing The Cognitive Demand Of Traditional And Reform Algebra 1 Textbooks, Allison M. Park
HMC Senior Theses
Research has shown that students achieved higher standardized test scores in mathematics and gained more positive attitudes towards mathematics after learning from reform curricula. Because these studies involve actual students and teachers, there are classroom variables that are involved in these findings (Silver and Stein, 1996; Stein et al., 1996). To understand how much these curricula by themselves contribute to higher test scores, I have studied the cognitive demand of tasks in two traditional and two reform curricula. This work required the creation of a scale to categorize tasks based on their level of cognitive demand. This scale relates to …
What Do We Mean By Mathematical Proof?, Todd Cadwalladerolsker
What Do We Mean By Mathematical Proof?, Todd Cadwalladerolsker
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Mathematical proof lies at the foundations of mathematics, but there are several notions of what mathematical proof is, or might be. In fact, the idea of mathematical proof continues to evolve. In this article, I review the body of literature that argues that there are at least two widely held meanings of proof, and that the standards of proof are negotiated and agreed upon by the members of mathematical communities. The formal view of proof is contrasted with the view of proofs as arguments intended to convince a reader. These views are examined in the context of the various roles …

Lifting As We Climb: African American Women's Education Experience In The Ivory Tower, Bonnie Lynn Reddick
Lifting As We Climb: African American Women's Education Experience In The Ivory Tower, Bonnie Lynn Reddick
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This study uses mixed methods to examine the experiences of African American women in doctoral programs. 102 African American women completed an on-line survey, and twenty women participated in one-on-one interviews. As an African American female, the researcher is interested in comparing the experiences of African American women: critiquing, analyzing and interpreting similarities and points of divergence in their experiences, and articulating stories of triumph and struggle, using a narrative style. This study confirms that Black women have experienced success in doctoral programs. Some of the participants had meaningful and supportive mentors. They have had limited exposure to Black faculty …
Teacher-Student Relationships In Project Based Learning: A Case Study Of High Tech Middle North County, Jennifer Ray Pieratt
Teacher-Student Relationships In Project Based Learning: A Case Study Of High Tech Middle North County, Jennifer Ray Pieratt
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between pedagogy and teacher-student relationships. Researchers have hypothesized that these relationships can promote better student achievement, particularly among low-income students, and that instruction primarily shapes these relationships. Yet not enough is known about these relationships or their connection to student performance to move forward with school or teaching reforms. This study addresses this lack of knowledge. As such, it contributes to a stream of research that attempts to understand factors that contribute to student learning. The study setting is High Tech Middle North County (HTMNC), a charter school in San …
Ganas And The Swan: American Materialism In Mathematics Education, Taylor Berliant
Ganas And The Swan: American Materialism In Mathematics Education, Taylor Berliant
CMC Senior Theses
Math is a unique subject. It is a different type of thinking for many people. Even though topics in math are separate, math is seen as a whole unlike many other subjects. Science, literature, history, art, languages, and physical education, the subjects, in addition to math, that make up the typical high school curriculum, are hardly ever referred to without additional labeling. Many of the subjects even contain topics with nearly incomparable material. The idea of math as a whole, at least in high school, is not completely untrue. A lot of the topics rely on the knowledge of previous …

"They Need To Understand How To Educate Her": The Parent Experience In Special Education, Michelle Harvey
CMC Senior Theses
This study attempted to improve upon previous qualitative research by conducting a large scale, quantitative study on the parental experience in special education. 76 parents of children receiving special education services were surveyed regarding their communication with school personnel, the focus of their child’s education, involvement in the IEP meeting, and satisfaction. It was found that parental perception of involvement did not predict active IEP involvement, more communication with school personnel, more satisfaction with services received, or the belief the child is benefiting. An active role in the IEP meeting, though, did predict more satisfaction with the last IEP meeting, …
Finding Relationships Between Multiple-Choice Math Tests And Their Stem-Equivalent Constructed Responses, Nayla Aad Chaoui
Finding Relationships Between Multiple-Choice Math Tests And Their Stem-Equivalent Constructed Responses, Nayla Aad Chaoui
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The study takes a close look at relationships between scores on a Mathematics standardized test in two different testing formats - Multiple-Choice (MC) and Constructed Response (CR). Many studies have been dedicated to finding correlations between item format characteristics with regards to race and gender. Few studies, however, have attempted to explore differences in the performance of English Learners in a low performing, predominantly Latino high school. The study also determined relationships between math scores and gender and math scores and language proficiency, as well as relationships between CAHSEE and CST scores.
Statistical analyses were performed using correlations, descriptive statistics, …
Teachers Unions: What Makes Them Unique And Are They The Gatekeepers To Education Excellence?, Angela Marie Estrella-Lemus
Teachers Unions: What Makes Them Unique And Are They The Gatekeepers To Education Excellence?, Angela Marie Estrella-Lemus
CMC Senior Theses
It has been ingrained into the American consciousness that our public schools are failing and our students are underachieving. This is something we all know. What is less clear is why American schools are failing. Time and time again, we come back to teachers, who have been identified as the single greatest factor in determining the success of the student. Teachers can make the difference in the lives of students and help secure our economic future. Teachers unions speak for these teachers, thus, in our search for a scapegoat, teachers unions often rank at the top. Right or wrong, it …
History Education And Identity Formation: A Case Study Of Uganda, Takako Mino
History Education And Identity Formation: A Case Study Of Uganda, Takako Mino
CMC Senior Theses
History education builds the foundation of a common past necessary for the formation of group identity. Evaluating History curricula is important because group identity guides people’s political behavior. This Uganda case study demonstrates how different actors have manipulated History education in order to enhance the saliency of ethnic, national, and regional identities. The expansion of nationalized education and the teaching of Ugandan, East African, and African history have contributed to fostering the rise of national consciousness in Uganda. Greater awareness of national identity has promoted national integration while marginalizing non-school educated people.
El Colegio Fundación Fernando Borrero Caicedo: Un Sistema Educativo Alternativo En Colombia, Caitlin J. Latta
El Colegio Fundación Fernando Borrero Caicedo: Un Sistema Educativo Alternativo En Colombia, Caitlin J. Latta
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis investigates the success of the academic program of El Colegio Fundación Fernando Borrero Caicedo, a small private school in Facatativa, Colombia, and the ways in which the school may be a model for other similar private schools both nationally and internationally. Using observation and personal interviews with parents, administrators and students affiliated with El Colegio Fundación Fernando Borrero Caicedo, this thesis discusses the school’s main strength, its close-knit and compassionate community, as it relates to the school’s success.
